Meet Nayelly Gonzalez, a GEAR UP New Mexico alum from Albuquerque Talent Development Academy! 🎓

Nayelly is on her way to becoming an educator, and is currently attending UNM for a degree in education after graduating with her associates degree from CNM last spring.

Nayelly is also a part of the Golden Apple Scholars Program, which she thanks her GEAR UP Program Coordinator for. Being a Golden Apple Scholar has provided her opportunities to gain hands-on experience in the classroom, as well as providing financial aid! 🍎

We at GEAR UP New Mexico are so proud of Nayelly and all she has already accomplished, and can’t wait to see where she will go next. ✨

We were busy last month—and so were our GEAR UP New Mexico students! ✨

With National GEAR UP Week taking place from the 21st-25th of September, GEAR UP New Mexico kicked our programming into high gear.

National GEAR UP Week is an opportunity to uplift students, make connections, and provide a glimpse into the opportunities available after high school. From college and career fairs, to head-to-head competitions relating to the trades, GEAR UP New Mexico students had the opportunity to learn about numerous postsecondary options both within their communities and beyond. 🎉

And as always, a big thank you to our amazing GEAR UP Student CEO’s and our phenomenal program coordinators for making it all possible!

Happy World Teacher Appreciation Day!

Thank you for uplifting our communities, lighting the way for our students, and fostering the minds of the next generation. Our work wouldn’t be possible without you!

Curiosity is sparked and confidence is built through hands-on experiences. During National Apprenticeship Week, GEAR UP New Mexico students got the chance to try their hand at skills learned through practice in New Mexico’s registered apprenticeship programs.

Last spring, students hit the road for the Workforce Development Bus Tour, where they heard from industry professionals about career pathways in healthcare, plumbing, linework, electrical, HVAC, early childhood education, and more.

And the best part? Little Globe followed GEAR UP students throughout the entire experience, capturing the people and organizations that made the bus tour possible—including CNM Ingenuity and FOCUS Training EDU

Meet Zoey Brazil, an alum of Mountainair High School! 🎓

Today, Zoey is a first grade teacher at Mountainair Elementary after earning her degree in Elementary Education from Eastern New Mexico University.

While talking with Zoey, we asked about her GEAR UP experience—and how she views that experience now that she’s an educator herself.

Her answer? She hopes her students have the same kind of support that her GEAR UP Coordinator provided her.

Guiding and supporting students as they navigate high school, explore their options, and develop their postsecondary plans is what GEAR UP New Mexico is all about.

Zoey’s story is a powerful reminder that the support students receive today can shape the educators, mentors, and leaders they become tomorrow.

And, as always—dream big! ✨

🎓 Meet Carlos Chavez, an alum of Albuquerque Talent Development Academy!

Carlos is now a sophomore at New Mexico Tech, where he’s studying chemical engineering. 🧪⛏️

Like many students, Carlos felt nervous about taking the next step into college. But by learning more about his options, stepping outside his comfort zone, and getting support from his GEAR UP coordinator, Carlos found the confidence to move forward.

GEAR UP New Mexico Leadership Conferences also gave Carlos opportunities to explore his future, build his leadership skills, and connect with new possibilities along the way.

Today, we’re celebrating Carlos and all he’s accomplishing! We’re so proud of our GEAR UP New Mexico alumni and can’t wait to see where their journeys take them.

Go Miners! ⛏️💙

FAFSA = More Opportunities for Your Future!

Before you apply, make sure you:
- Create your FSA ID
- Gather the financial information you'll need
- Complete your FAFSA as early as possible
- Watch for emails from your college about next steps

Need help? Your GEAR UP Program Coordinator is here to answer questions, walk you through the FAFSA process, and help you prepare for college or trade school.

Don't wait until the deadline. Start planning your future today!
