I LOVE being a part of this!! 3 years strong! This year we had an increase in the imperiled Tricolored bat and a new species entering our area, in droves, the Southern Yellow bat. Stay tuned for our 2026 bat distribution results!

I want yโ€™all to meet โ€œLucky Lucy.โ€
She is a Mexican Free-tail bat found and rescued by John and Rachel. Unfortunately, she passed away during the transit to our facility. She had a broken jaw and injured eye but hung in there until help could arrive. She passed in peace, free of predators and pain. It is hard when these precious creatures leave us but at least they did it in a safe, warm, and loving environment.

๐Ÿ‚ Fall reminder: Leave the leaves! ๐Ÿ‚

As the leaves start to fall, resist the urge to rake every corner of your yard. Leaving some leaf litter behind is one of the easiest ways to support wildlife and build healthier soil.

๐Ÿฆ‡ Bats need leaves, too! Some bat species, including eastern red bats, can overwinter in or beneath leaf litter. Leaving leaves in natural areas can provide important shelter for these bats during the colder months.

๐Ÿ› Wildlife: Fallen leaves provide food, shelter, and overwintering habitat for insects and other invertebrates, as well as butterflies, moths, beetles, salamanders, frogs, and more.

๐ŸŒฑ Healthy soil: As leaves break down, they return nutrients and organic matter to the soil, supporting healthy plants and beneficial microorganisms.

You don't have to leave every leaf exactly where it falls. Try leaving natural areas unraked and keeping leaves under trees and shrubs.

A little "mess" can go a long way for wildlife. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ‚

NEW RECRUITS NEEDED๐Ÿข

The GCTSR is the permitted lead on the upper Texas coast for all sea turtle activities, and we are actively recruiting Rescue & Recovery Team members for Bolivar, Surfside, Quintana, Sargent, and East Matagorda!

Some of these areas are remote and primarily accessible by beach, so drivers with 4WD trucks or UTVs are especially helpful. We need volunteers who are comfortable working with live and deceased sea turtles. This may include rescuing or recovering them from the beach or piers, transporting them, and collecting data for research and documentation. If youโ€™re willing to handle these turtles and want to make a difference in marine conservation, this is the team for you!

Mandatory training is required, you must attend one GCSTR training session in person (set for November 13th or 14th) and one TPWD training session (dates coming soon)!
