Sonoma County Groundwater Sonoma County's Groundwater Sustainability Agencies: Santa Rosa Plain, Sonoma Valley, Petaluma Valley

Groundwater Sustainability Agencies (GSAs) are entities formed by local government agencies with land use authority or water supply or water management responsibilities. A Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP) is a 20-year plan to ensure the sustainable use of groundwater within a groundwater basin. The Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA) is required by state law, the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), to develop a GSP by January 31, 2022. The goal of the GSP is to establish a standard for “sustainability” of groundwater management and use, and to determine how the basin will achieve this standard.

At Vadasz Family Vineyard in Sonoma Valley, Tyler Klick from Redwood Empire Vineyard Management (REVM) implements a data-driven approach for growing great grapes, and protecting groundwater at the same time. By implementing this careful approach to irrigation (soil moisture sensors, porometers, and targeted irrigation bypasses), the vineyard is cutting groundwater demand by an estimated 5%, all while improving w**e quality.

It's a simple but powerful reminder: sustainable choices made today by ag leaders help protect water resources for the whole community tomorrow.

As we approach the rainy season, there are ways you can help more precipitation make its way underground to recharge the aquifer, instead of drain to the street and away from your property. Get strategies for retaining the rain on your land to slow it, spread it, sink it: wellawaretoolkit.org

Hydrogeological modeling, monitoring well data and climate data are just a few indicators of how much water our groundwater basins can sustainably provide from year to year without a dangerous pattern of decline. We refer to this as the groundwater basin's sustainable yield, the maximum amount of water (measures in acre-feet) that can be withdrawn without causing long-term harm.

So how are we doing? Our 2025 Water Year Annual Reports showed that in Petaluma Valley and Santa Rosa Plain groundwater levels were in a good range, and use did not exceed the yield, but the Sonoma Valley subbasin showed that too much water was extracted. You can read about what that means, and why it matters: sonomavalleygroundwater.org/annual-reports

Sonoma County's three Groundwater Sustainability Agencies are now inviting people to consider applying to serve on their respective Advisory Committees, in one of the interest-based seats. Terms are ending at the end of this year, and current members can reapply to continue service, and new people are invited to represent business, agriculture, environmental, rural residential and community at-large. The committees meet several times a year and provide recommendations to GSA staff and the board of directors related to programs and projects. Groundwater management in Sonoma County is community-led. Residential well
owners, farmers, environmental advocates, business leaders, technical experts and local leaders all have a seat at the table, because the people who live here know what's at stake and what our water future needs to look like.
From September 14-October 30, all three GSAs are inviting applications for interest-based seats on their respective Advisory Committees. Consider serving in this volunteer role for a two year term, Jan. 2027-Dec. 2028.

When it comes to sustainable water use, Sonoma State University is leading by example, irrigating almost the entire campus with recycled water, upgrading infrastructure to save over 1 million gallons, and transforming landscaping to protect local groundwater. A great model for sustainable water practices in action!
