[Español abajo] Another hot day is ahead in Sonoma County, with temperatures expected to reach the mid-to-high 90s in many areas. A Heat Advisory is in effect, so take steps to protect yourself, your family and your pets.

☀️ Stay safe in the heat:
• Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
• Stay in air conditioning or another cool place as much as possible.
• Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
• Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and wear sunscreen and hats when outdoors.
• Check on older adults, young children, neighbors and anyone who may be especially vulnerable to extreme heat.
• Never leave children or pets in a parked car, even for a short time.
• Make sure pets have plenty of fresh water and access to shade. Limit walks and outdoor activity during the hottest hours.

Know the signs of heat illness: Heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea and confusion can be warning signs. Move to a cooler place, drink water and seek medical help if symptoms are severe or worsening.

Stay cool, stay hydrated and look out for one another.

~~~
Se espera otro día caluroso en el condado de Sonoma, con temperaturas que podrían oscilar entre los 95 y 99 grados Fahrenheit (aprox. 35-37 °C) en muchas zonas. Hay una advertencia de calor vigente, así que tome medidas para protegerse a sí mismo, a su familia y a sus mascotas.
☀️ Protéjase del calor:
• Beba abundante agua a lo largo del día.
• Permanezca en lugares con aire acondicionado o en sitios frescos siempre que sea posible.
• Evite realizar actividades físicas intensas al aire libre durante las horas de mayor calor.
• Use ropa ligera y holgada, y aplíquese protector solar y use sombrero cuando esté al aire libre.
• Esté pendiente de las personas mayores, los niños pequeños, los vecinos y cualquier persona que pueda ser especialmente vulnerable al calor extremo.
• Nunca deje a niños ni mascotas dentro de un vehículo estacionado, ni siquiera por poco tiempo.
• Asegúrese de que sus mascotas tengan suficiente agua fresca y acceso a sombra. Limite los paseos y las actividades al aire libre durante las horas de más calor.
Identifique los síntomas de las enfermedades relacionadas con el calor: la sudoración excesiva, la debilidad, los mareos, el dolor de cabeza, las náuseas y la confusión pueden ser señales de alerta. Trasládese a un lugar más fresco, beba agua y busque atención médica si los síntomas son graves o empeoran.
Manténgase fresco, manténgase hidratado y cuide de los demás.
Celebrating opportunity and resilience!
On Aug. 6, the Valley of the Moon Children's Foundation awarded $162,500 in scholarships to 43 current and former Sonoma County foster youth, helping them pursue their college and career dreams.
Founded in 2006 by former Human Services Director Dianne Edwards, the scholarship program has grown through the generosity of donors across Sonoma County, funding 512 scholarships totaling more than $1.8 million over the last two decades.
These scholarships help cover tuition, books, housing, and other expenses so foster youth can pursue trade school, associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees and even PhDs in fields ranging from engineering to social work. Many recipients later give back by volunteering with the foundation or serving on its board.
One scholarship recipient shared the impact of this support:
“Having this scholarship means I don’t need to decide between my education or having food… To be able to be here today and achieve this opportunity is extraordinary because this doesn’t happen very often with foster youth.”
The Valley of the Moon Children’s Foundation continues to support youth connected to the Valley of the Moon Children’s Center (Sonoma County’s only 24-hour emergency shelter for foster youth) helping them build bright, successful futures.
