UPDATE: A Red Flag Warning has been issued. See current post

💨 🌡️ 🔥 A Fire Weather Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service for the North Bay Interior Mountains, which includes the upper elevations of east Sonoma County. The Watch goes into effect tonight, Thursday (10/15) at 10:00 p.m, and will continue through 11:00 a.m., tomorrow (Friday) morning.

The microclimates in Santa Rosa were in full effect overnight. Temperatures dropped into the 40s and the humidity came way up across central and west Santa Rosa, but our Santa Rosa Fire Department weather station in Fountaingrove showed the temps stayed in the mid 60s with a northeast breeze and the humidity remained in the 20s. These dry warm conditions overnight in our hills highlights the concerns from the National Weather Service over the next day or two. You can monitor our local conditions at SRCity.org/Weather.

Although the Fire Weather Watch does not include the city limits of Santa Rosa, community members are still encouraged to be wildfire ready by visiting SRCity.org/ReadySR and SRCity.org/WildfireReady.

At 6:53 a.m. yesterday morning, the Santa Rosa Fire Department received a report of a residential structure fire on Wall Place off West 3rd Street. The first engine arrived at scene in under 4 minutes and reported an exterior fence fire with the fire spreading into the residence. Fire crews pulled hose lines and simultaneously extinguished the exterior fire and made access into the residence. Interior crews found the fire had extended into the attic of the residence. Crews were able to systematically pull the sheetrock from the ceiling and extinguish the attic fire preventing it from spreading to an attached 2 story apartment building. The Ladder Truck crew cut a ventilation holes in the roof to allow the release of superheated gases and smoke, while the crew of the Rescue Company conducted a search of the residence to ensure there were no victims still inside.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire, and there were no functioning smoke detectors found within the residence. Fortunately, alert neighbors noticed the fire on the porch of the residence and immediately called 911 to report the fire. Quick actions of neighbors and a quick response from Fire crews kept the fire from spreading to adjoining buildings.

The fire was brought under control in approximately 20 minutes.

PG&E assisted with securing gas and electrical services to the residence. The City of Santa Rosa Building Department was contacted to assess the building for safety and tenability.

Damage to the residence is estimated at $150,000.00. And one resident has been displaced. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the SRFD Fire Prevention Bureau. However, it has been determined that the fire originated in an exterior trash can and may be a result of improperly discarded materials.
