What's happening beneath the future Watmaugh Road Bridge? Quite a bit!
These latest construction photos offer a behind-the-scenes look at the foundations and concrete supports taking shape along Sonoma Creek.

Here's what you're seeing:
- Crews are building the abutments, the structures at each end of the bridge that will support the new crossing.
- They're also constructing the bridge's concrete piers. The lower foundations are 6 feet in diameter, with narrower 4-foot columns extending upward to support the future bridge deck.
- Along the creek, crews are also placing rock to help protect against erosion and preparing the construction site for winter weather.

Much of this work will eventually be hidden beneath the finished bridge, but it's essential to building a stronger, more earthquake-resistant crossing.

Watmaugh Road remains closed at the bridge, with the replacement project expected to continue through summer 2027.

Help shape safer routes to school in Guerneville!
What would make walking and bicycling near local schools safer and more accessible? Share your feedback on proposed improvements along Armstrong Woods Road and Laughlin Road, including sidewalks, safer crossings, bicycle facilities, and accessible curb ramps.

Sonoma County Transportation and Climate Authorities, in partnership with Sonoma County Public Infrastructure, is developing a Safe Routes to School Infrastructure Plan. Your input will help refine the concepts and support future project planning and funding efforts.

🚧 Road Work Update: Getting Ready for the Rain 🚧
With rain in the forecast, Sonoma County Road Maintenance crews are continuing preparations for winter, focusing on drainage improvements, erosion control, and pothole repairs.

This week's work includes:
- Installing erosion control measures to help protect roadsides during storms
- Cleaning roadside ditches and culverts to keep stormwater moving
- Replacing culverts on Wright Lane and St. Helena Road
- Patching potholes and repairing road shoulders
- Clearing roadside vegetation, including continued work with CAL FIRE
- Maintaining bridges, traffic signs, and roadway markings

📸 This week's photos highlight several recent projects, including shoulder repairs on Millbrae Avenue, drainage and roadside stabilization work on North Fitch Mountain Road, and debris removal at the Rio Nido Canyon 3 basin. These projects help manage stormwater, protect roadways, and reduce the risk of erosion and flooding.

🌧️ Seasonal Crossing Update: With rain approaching, crews will begin staging equipment at the Asti summer crossing on Washington School Road in preparation for its seasonal removal.

No closure date has been established for the Asti or Odd Fellows crossings. Crews will continue monitoring weather conditions and provide as much advance notice as possible before either crossing closes.

Thank you to our Road Maintenance teams for their continued work preparing our roads for winter. Please slow down, stay alert, and give crews plenty of room to work safely.

Cloverdale Transit Depot temporary parking lot closure

The parking lot is currently closed to general parking as CAL FIRE uses the site for staging and fueling operations supporting the Cooley Fire response. The Zero Waste Sonoma recycling event remains unaffected and continues until 5 p.m. today, Sunday, October 18.

Up to 25 fire apparatus are expected to be fueled, so the designated area must remain clear. Parking for the Cloverdale dog park is affected. Street-side bus and other transportation pickup remains available.

CAL FIRE’s use of the lot is expected to last 2–5 days, depending on progress with the fire response.

Sonoma County Public Infrastructure is proud to support CAL FIRE and the crews protecting our communities. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Wohler Bridge: A View You Won't See Again!
Here are two more photos giving another behind-the-scenes look at Wohler Bridge, and a perspective that's about to disappear beneath concrete.

Before crews can pour the new bridge deck, there's a lot of preparation happening inside the historic steel truss structure.

First came the corrugated metal decking, followed by steel studs that help connect the new concrete deck to the bridge's steel framework. Crews then placed a network of reinforcing steel to strengthen the concrete.

These photos show how those layers come together, including a close-up of the intricate steel reinforcement that will soon be hidden beneath the finished roadway.

It's a rare look at the work that goes into strengthening a historic bridge.

What's next? The new lightweight concrete deck pour is underway. The bridge remains closed as construction continues, and we'll share a revised reopening timeframe once the remaining schedule is confirmed.
