Sonoma County Government Belongs in the Community: Not in a Developer’s Stranded Office Complex

The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors is once again preparing to advance a deeply misguided plan to shift the center of county government away from central Santa Rosa and into a privately developed office complex near the airport.

We strongly oppose this move.

35 Years, One Door at a Time: Happy Birthday, SCCA!

On September 9, 1991, Mark Green knocked on his first door in Windsor.

Sonoma County Conservation Action had no long track record. No newsletter. No political report card. In fact, neither of those things existed yet. What Mark had was an idea, a clipboard, and a promise that SCCA was going to become a powerful grassroots voice for Sonoma County’s environment.

And at that very first door, a resident wrote him a check for $25.

Or maybe it was $36. The exact amount has gotten a little fuzzy over 35 years.

The important part is this: it worked...

A new SMART station in Geyserville took a major step from possibility to reality this week when the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit Board of Directors approved the Geyserville Station Project and added it to SMART’s program.

The August 19 decision means SMART can now move the station into regional planning, project development and the search for funding. It is an important distinction that the vote does not yet authorize construction; additional funding and implementation steps will still be required before work can begin.

Still, for a community that has been bypassed by passenger rail for nearly 70 years, the vote represents a significant milestone.

On July 18, communities across the United States came together for the first nationwide day of action against the rapid expansion of massive data centers built to power artificial intelligence. What had largely been a series of local battles over zoning and development erupted into a coordinated national movement, with 142 protests across 42 states. Texas alone hosted 18 demonstrations, followed by Georgia and California, highlighting how opposition to unchecked data center development is crossing traditional political and geographic divides.
