Gift of USMA Class of 1956
General Schwarzkopf graduated 43rd of 480 (Cullum #20676) in the USMA Class of 1956. Commissioned in the Infantry, he served his entire career in the arena of the Cold War, beginning with the 101st Airborne Division and then the 6th Infantry Regiment in occupied Berlin. After earning a masters degree at the University of Southern California, he taught mechanics at West Point from 1964 to 1968, broken by a year as an advisor to a Vietnamese airborne unit. From lieutenant colonel to lieutenant general, his assignments generally alternated between high-level staff positions and troop command. He returned to Vietnam in 1969 to lead a battalion in the 23rd Division, commanded a brigade of the 9th Division (1976-78), was assistant commander of the 8th Division in Germany (1980-82), and commanded the 24th Division (1983-85). He served twice with the Navy, first as a planner in Hawaii and later in a key coordinating role in the 1983 invasion of Grenada. After commanding I Corps at Fort Lewis (1986-87), he became the Army’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations. In 1988 he received his fourth star to head Central Command. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, he became the Commanding General of Coalition Forces for the Gulf War. He gained international fame by expelling Saddam Hussein’s Republican Guard from Kuwait in just a few days in early 1991. He retired later that year after 35 years of active service. At age 78, General Schwarzkopf died December 27, 2012 in Tampa, Florida.
