So happy for more than a dozen of families served by our agency who made it to the wait list!
Perusing job openings with clients today left me feeling gravely concerned. The average help wanted post in the county offers pay from $18-24, while the ability to qualify for an apartment requires a salary of $37-43 per hour.
Housing is at a crisis here, and we need to replace this idea of “affordable units” with “reality based rent.”
Sarasota Housing Authority
Sarasota Housing Authority (SHA) is committed to providing quality affordable housing to enhance the lives of our residents and promote their independence.

Homelessness has climbed 12% among those we can count.
Our challenge continues to be the prevalence of the hidden homeless, those families with children who work hard to keep their homelessness a secret for fear of losing their children.
Family Promise of Sarasota-Manatee has two programs designed to address family homelessness, to keep families together and living in safety.
As the year draws to a close, please choose to support our work with your charitable donations, and let’s help reduce the number of children across Sarasota & Manatee who might otherwise become part of the rising, hidden homeless.
US homelessness up 12% to highest reported level as rents soar and coronavirus pandemic aid lapses - NewsBreak
WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States experienced a dramatic 12% increase in homelessness to its highest reported level as soaring rents and a decline in coronavirus pandemic assistance combined to put housing out of reach for more Americans, federal officials said Friday. Family Promise of Sarasota-Manatee is extremely grateful to the Athena Progressive Giving Circle for their grant of $10,000 in support of our Francis House program.
Francis House, established in October 2021, is a supportive housing program specifically designed to provide shelter for pregnant women and their children, moving them from homelessness to a home-like environment.
As with all programming at Family Promise, there is no cost for services, and every family receives individualized case management designed to foster independent living upon graduation.
Thank you to the Community Foundation of Sarasota for making this grant possible, and to the donors of the Athena Progressive Giving Circle.
Your support makes it possible for us to transform lives and end family homelessness.

On the Today show, anchor Craig Melvin discusses his family’s personal choice to rehab an old family home to be utilized as a home in the Family Promise supportive housing program.
I’ve been asked a few times today if we had the capacity to accept such an offer here in Sarasota or Manatee, and the answer is a resounding YES.
Do you have a vacant property in need of love and good tenants? Please reach out. Your vacant property can become a supportive housing opportunity for an area family in need.
Let’s fill every vacant home with a child’s laughter and the chance for a family to make a new start with our help.
Craig Melvin’s family home repurposed as transitional housing
A house that has been in Craig Melvin’s family since it was built in 1950 was put up for auction to pay for medical bills — but Craig’s family bought it to keep it in the family. They decided it could be put to a greater purpose and it’s being leased to a nonprofit called Family Promise to p...

The Charitable Giving Coalition sent a letter today to congressional leaders calling for the passage of the bipartisan Charitable Act, which would restore and expand the non-itemizer charitable deduction. The letter is signed by over 1,000 organizations from all 50 states, representing a wide range of the sector – from food banks to faith-based organizations – joining together to call for restoring the deduction that provided all taxpayers an incentive to give in 2020 and 2021. https://ow.ly/scTK50Qc5SC
