May is National Historic Preservation Month! To celebrate, the History Center is showcasing some of our county's historic landmarks!

The Scott Building is a significant historic building listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the Sarasota County Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1960 and designed by William Rupp and Joseph Farrell, architects in the Mid-Century Modern style. It originally housed the Barkus furniture store for many years.

In our community, the Mid-Century Modern style of architecture is analogous with the Sarasota School of Architecture movement and The Scott Building is an excellent example of this architectural style.

You can still see this building today at the corner of Orange Avenue and Morrill Street in Sarasota!
