While school was out for students last Monday, Saratoga Union School District (SUSD) site staff were hard at work leveling up their skills during our district-wide professional development day.

The morning kicked off with a whole-group session led by Artificial Intelligence (AI) consultant AJ Juliani, where teachers explored innovative tools like MagicSchool and practiced initiating grade-level escape room prompts to bring immersive, interactive problem-solving into our classrooms. Staff then dove into hands-on teacher-led breakout sessions including AI tools (Prompting, Gemini Notebook, Google classroom), time-saving AI strategies, data and math instruction. The day closed with dedicated collaboration and planning time for all staff.

As SUSD explores these modern tools, we view AI as a tool—not a replacement—for learning. It is helping us elevate our curriculum, spark creativity and make lessons feel even more connected and relevant to today’s students. After all, technology can never replace the heart, empathy and passion our SUSD staff bring every day and the human connections they build to continue remaining at the center of “Nurturing minds. Inspiring futures.”

This week we are continuing our weekly site leader profiles for National Principals Month with Debbie Stewart from Foothill Elementary School. Stewart has been with Saratoga Union School District for two years, bringing her own personal touch to everything she does, including the Principal Read Alouds that were featured on social media earlier this month.

Foothill staff see her as a wonderful leader, with first-grade teacher Marie Carrington sharing a fitting Dolly Parton quote to describe her: “If your actions create a legacy that inspires others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then you are an excellent leader.”

And the teachers aren’t the only ones who agree! When Foothill transitional kindergarteners were asked to weigh in on what Stewart's spirit animal is, they answered without a doubt: a unicorn. 🦄

It comes as no surprise, as Principal Stewart brings sunshine, sparkle and magic with her everywhere she goes on campus. We are so grateful for her leadership and dedication to upholding our mission of "Nurturing minds. Inspiring futures."

Happy National School Lunch Week (October 12-16)! 🍎🌮 At Saratoga Union School District, we offer free breakfast and lunch to all 1,525 of our students every single school day, fueling young minds so they can thrive academically, physically and emotionally. But let’s be honest: good nutrition is even better when it’s student-approved.

For the second year in a row, our Redwood Middle School students took on the ultimate responsibility as official taste testers one day during lunch. Students sampled potential future menu items and voted on what makes the cut.

The results?
-Savory beef birria and warm banana bread flew off the tables from eager hands coming back, sometimes even for seconds and thirds
-More than 500 100 percent fruit slushies vanished in minutes
-Tasty new snacks received a resounding thumbs-up

After casting their votes with a sticker, students got to spin the prize wheel for fun goodies like grilled cheese plushies, apple squishies and notepads.

Thank you to the representatives who came out to host this event for our students: Cathy Ried from Integrated Food Service, Jamie Gleaves from Affinity and AnMarie Davis from Peterson Farms. They represent broader food service companies and primarily focus on kindergarten through 12th grade food products.

Additional thanks goes out to our Child Nutrition team for keeping District students fed, happy and ready to learn every day, ensuring that SUSD continues fulfilling its mission of "Nurturing minds. Inspiring futures."

As part of National Principals Month, Saratoga Union School District is kicking off our principal profiles this week! Who better to highlight first than Argonaut Elementary School Principal Joe Bosco, our most veteran site leader? 🍎✨

Even with 16 years of principal experience in the District under his belt, Principal Bosco constantly puts his students, families and staff first and foremost, and it doesn’t go unnoticed.

As Argonaut staff shared: "Joe’s leadership style is grounded in open communication. He leads with an open-door approach, making himself approachable and easy to talk to. Teachers feel comfortable sharing their ideas, thoughts and concerns with him because they know he will listen, collaborate with them and work together to find a solution."

Principal Bosco also knows that support comes in all forms, including bringing laughter into the school day. On Dolly Parton Day (September 25), he was even spotted wearing a blonde wig in her honor. 👱‍♀️🎶

It just goes to show that our principals realize there are many ways to uphold our mission of "Nurturing minds. Inspiring futures." We are so grateful for his leadership and dedicated experience.

October is National Book Month! 📚✨ But for Foothill Elementary School Principal Debbie Stewart, reading isn’t just a monthlong event. It's a year-round passion. While her signature "Principal Read Aloud" habit began back in 2017 when she first became a principal, she has proudly carried the tradition forward since joining Saratoga Union School District in 2024. Every month, Principal Stewart visits every classroom at Foothill Elementary, sharing a story tied to character, diversity and connection.

“When I left the classroom, I couldn't give it up,” Stewart reflected. By sharing stories and being an open book about her own mistakes and learning moments, she fosters empathy and shows students that everyone carries a unique story worth honoring.

Through every page turned and every conversation sparked, this monthly tradition highlights how District leaders stay focused on our core mission in everything they do: “Nurturing minds. Inspiring futures.”

Watch the video to hear more from Principal Stewart and see last month’s Read Aloud of “The Name Jar” in action. 🎥

You’d usually associate vending machines with chips, candy and soda. But at Saratoga Elementary School, they’re feeding young minds with a fresh story instead. 📚Introduced last year as a gift from the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), the book vending machine is now fully in motion this year, giving students a fun, interactive way to unwrap a new story and fuel their love for reading. Students earn special book tokens by "getting caught" following the Sea Turtle Way: being kind, safe and responsible. 🐢

“When students make kind, safe and responsible choices, we want them to feel proud of themselves, and there’s something really special about letting them choose a book as a celebration of that success.” —Principal Kristin Murphy

Whether they’re grabbing a quick "book bite" during Friday lunch or celebrating an extra-special win during the week, our Sea Turtles love this fun way to satisfy their appetite for reading. Additionally, the long-standing tradition of donating turtle shells to local charities like the Humane Society and American Cancer Society is still going strong alongside it.

A huge thank you to the PTA for bringing this vision to life, the dedicated parent volunteer who keeps the shelves freshly stocked and all the generous families who donate books to make this possible. It's just one more way the Saratoga Union School District is “Nurturing minds. Inspiring futures.” one page at a time.

🎨 Happy National Arts in Education Week (September 13–19)! 🎨 To celebrate, we’re highlighting Argonaut Elementary art teacher Wenlan Lu. This summer, she gave the school’s wall ball murals a makeover, blending previous designs with core values set by Principal Joe Bosco: inclusion, empathy, kindness and resilience. For Lu, it’s a full-circle moment: she’s a former Argonaut mom of two sons and was an art volunteer long before teaching here.

And in a world full of artificial intelligence (AI), Lu isn't brush-ing off her passion. Pointing to a tree, she shares that no two people see the same object identically in color, detail or spirit. The beauty of humanity is the unique perspective we each bring: something AI can never replace.

Special thanks to Argonaut administrative assistant Gina Safine and Director of Facilities Joe Martinez for helping bring this to life. As Lu shared: “This mural project is truly a team effort, and I am grateful for the opportunity to participate and work with such a wonderful team."

We love having educators who make learning a true work of art. Here’s to “Nurturing minds. Inspiring futures.” one brushstroke at a time.

From September 15 to October 15, Saratoga Union School District proudly honors Hispanic Heritage Month. This monthlong celebration aligns with several national independence anniversaries across Latin America, beginning with Mexican Independence Day on September 16.

We join our community in celebrating the rich history, vibrant cultures and invaluable contributions of Hispanic, Latinx and Latine Americans, from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

First established as a weeklong commemoration by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968, it was later expanded to a month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. Today, we celebrate the diverse voices and stories that enrich our schools and community every day where we continue “Nurturing minds. Inspiring futures.”
