Happy First Responders Appreciation Day!

Today, we’re especially grateful for our School Resource Officers (SROs) and the important role they play in our schools and communities!

SROs do so much more than help keep our schools safe. They build positive relationships with students, support staff, connect with families, and serve as trusted mentors and role models. Their presence helps create a safe, supportive environment where students can focus on learning, growing, and reaching their full potential.

To our School Resource Officers and all first responders who serve our schools and communities, thank you for your dedication and commitment to our students!

Reading is built skill by skill, day by day!

When a student is absent, missed lessons are hard to rebuild alone. Being at school every day keeps those literacy skills growing without gaps. Every Day Counts!

🛑 School Bus Safety Week 🛑

In a normal year, 500,000 buses nationwide take 26 million students to and from school each day. School + field trips + sports and more means buses log 10 billion miles traveled every year.

SUPERINTENDENT NEWS

Fall has arrived in the UP! The weather feels a little cooler, and the leaves are turning glorious colors. Schedules seem really busy, with meetings, sports, extracurricular activities, work, school, and family events all going on. What gives when families feel swamped? What can we do as educators to help students and families make school attendance a priority? Several districts in the EUP began studying attendance last year and considered ways to improve it.

According to Bridge Magazine (Lohman, Sept. 17, 2026), 27.2% of K-12 students are chronically absent. Chronic absence means missing 10% or more of the school year. A school year typically has 180 school days. Chronically absent students are missing 18 days or more of school!

Across the UP, districts are participating in a UP-wide attendance campaign, “Every Day Counts!” to highlight the importance of school attendance. This project is supported by the MiFamily Engagement Centers Region 1, with partial funding from the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential. Many schools have shared these posts on their social media pages. Have you seen the posts? Please share them with others as you see them.

Strong attendance is closely connected to literacy and achievement. Strong readers are more likely to succeed in school, graduate from high school, and have greater career opportunities. Kids who attend school regularly learn good habits that translate into a strong work ethic. School attendance can also build positive relationships.

As parents, educators, and community members, let’s make school attendance a priority!

🧹✨ Happy National Custodian Appreciation Day! ✨🧹

Today, we celebrate the incredible custodians who keep our schools, offices, and facilities clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone. Their hard work often happens behind the scenes, but their impact is seen and felt every day.

Thank you for your dedication, attention to detail, and commitment to creating positive environments for our students, staff, and visitors. We truly would be a mess without you!

Please join us in showing appreciation for the custodial staff who help keep the EUPISD shining!
