North Bay nonprofit removes deadly ghost nets from Great Pacific Garbage Patch | Pacific Sun Mary Crowley prefers not to use the term “garbage patch” when referring to the tons of plastic littering the Pacific Ocean and killing marine life. “Patch sounds small,” Crowley said. “People mistakenly think of it as a big clump of garbage.”

The North Pacific Subtropical Gyre is a swirling 7.7 million square mile garbage patch - twice the size of Texas. The World’s Second Largest Marine Salvage Company, Resolve Marine, renown for global ocean cleanup projects including the Deepwater Horizon, has teamed-up with Ocean Voyages Institute, the pioneering non-profit, for a Gyre cleanup in the summer of 2024. Resolve earned a global reputation for restoring pristine aquatic environments after capsized oil tankers, collisions between massive toxic-waste barges, dangerous chemical explosions on burning cargo ships and other giant environmental tragedies in the most remote areas of our planet. Mary and Joe will review plans to deploy the 207’ Resolve Pioneer for a Pacific Gyre cleanup of historic scale.

Ocean Voyages Institute (OVI) is a California based 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in 1979 with the goal of preservation of the maritime arts and sciences, ocean conservation and the preservation of island cultures.
Since 2008, OVI has been working on solutions to the proliferation of plastic pollution in our global ocean.
OVI established Project Kaisei in 2008 to focus on major ocean clean-up and to raise awareness regarding the global problem of marine debris/ocean trash. Since its inception in 2009, Project Kaisei heralds the need for our ocean ecosystem to recover and takes action both on land and in the sea. To date, Ocean Voyages / Project Kaisei has:
Sailed S/V Kaisei, Project Kaisei’s flagship, on three scientific voyages to the North Pacific Gyre, 2009, 2011 & 2012
Participated in maritime education festivals in San Diego, California and Richmond City, British Columbia
Convened a Marine Debris Collection Equipment Think Tank
Made educational presentations all over the world
Received national and international recognition
Created a documentary for educational distribution (in final editing)
The vital connection between the health of our global ocean, the health of our planet and our own health is intertwined. It is imperative to stop the flow of marine litter and toxins into our oceans. It is of equal importance to begin significant clean-up efforts along all coast lines and in the Gyres. We must take responsibility, as part of the problem and part of the solution, in order to restore the ocean’s ecosystem and preserve our ocean for future generations. In 2013, Project Kaisei continues this focus.
