As they do every year, the Chatham County Veterans Council held a Memorial Day Service at the Legionary Section in Bonaventure Cemetery. This year the ceremony was hosted by American Legion Post 36 and the keynote remarks were made by LTC (R) Doug Andrews. LTC Andrews commanded an Artillery Battery in Vietnam and later served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. He talked about five Soldiers who have lost their lives, to include one of his best friend, Richard Holt. He said that he had attended his friend's wedding and a few months later, after Richard was killed in action, he attended his funeral. That was 55 years ago, but Doug highlighted the importance of remembering and paying tribute to the sacrifices made. Thank you LTC Andrews, and thank you for all those from Chatham County that came out for the ceremony. We will not forget!

Yesterday evening the Rotary Club of St. Simons Island presented the annual Taps at Twilight Memorial Day Concert & Tribute. This outdoor event, held right along the water at Neptune Park, included a performance by the Golden Isles Community Band, bagpipe music, and the playing of Taps. The keynote speaker, LTG (R) William "Glenn" Webster, made inspiring remarks about his time commanding the 3rd Infantry Division in combat and told personal stories about some of the Soldier who were lost. Well done St. Simons; a fitting way to pay respect to the military members who have given all in service to our country.

Great day at the Georgia Capitol as Governor Brian Kemp signed into law two bills benefiting our military and veterans. House Bill 224 authorizes the GA DOT to contract for maintenance of roads on military installations, which is a win-win for the Army and for the State. House Bill 53 expands eligibility for Army Reserve and National Guard members to be buried in Georgia veterans cemeteries. Thanks to the Georgia General Assembly and to the Governor for continuing to support our Army.

What a pleasure it was to be the guest speaker at this week's STARBASE Savannah graduation on Hunter Army Airfield. Mrs. Elander's 5th grade class from St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School experienced a week of hands-on STEM activities with applications in the real world. It was obvious that they were not only having fun, but also learning. And I especially enjoyed their inquisitive questions! Great job STARBASE
