For the second week in a row the total number of mosquitoes rose over the previous week by almost 20%. This rise had much to do with black salt marsh mosquitoes, Ochlerotatus taeniorhynchus, invading areas along the Savannah River. Culex nigripalpus, known as the Florida Saint Louis Encephalitis mosquito, was also well represented in last week’s trap counts. No West Nile virus samples were recorded last week, although we are still awaiting results on some samples. To date, 39 positive samples have been found from 17 different locations within our service area. Remember to call or place a service request through our website: https://mosquitocontrol.chathamcountyga.gov/ to report any mosquito problem in your area. The total number of mosquitoes rose last week over the previous week by a little over 21%. The black salt marsh mosquito, Ochlerotatus taeniorhynchus, was the most commonly collected species, followed closely by Culex nigripalpus, which lead all
mosquito species last week. No new positive West Nile virus samples were recorded last week, although arbovirus season is far from over. Staff will be assessing any potential problems brought about by the rains that fell in association with the passage of Isaias, and treat areas for mosquito larvae as needed. West Nile virus continues to show up in our local mosquito samples. Last week, four more samples were found containing West Nile virus, two of these were from sites that had not been positive for virus this year. At present, West Nile virus has been recorded in 38 samples from 16 sites. In addition, two of our sentinel chickens tested positive for a flavivurus, although further analysis will be necessary to determine if either of these are West Nile or some other related virus. Overall mosquito numbers rose about 10% from a week ago, and much of this increase was related to the seasonal increase of Culex nigripalpus, a nondescript dark mosquito that generally feeds on a variety of cold and warm blooded organisms, including humans. The total number of mosquitoes dropped last week, as local mosquito populations are beginning to transition away from the summer varieties towards species more characteristic of the cooler Fall weather that is approaching. However, we are still well into arbovirus season, and West Nile virus was detected in two more local mosquito samples last week, bringing this year’s total to 34 positive samples from 13 sites (one of these sites is actually located in South Carolina).
