In The Blind Assassin, Margaret Atwood said "A paradox, the doughnut hole. Empty space, once, but now they've learned to market even that. A minus quantity; nothing, rendered edible. Does naming a sphere of nothingness transmute it into being?"

I had to wonder, does the same apply to empty components of the built environment? Am I a living being, or a mere shell of the past?
