Today, we pause not only to remember a birthday, but to recommit ourselves to a legacy.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. taught us that the law is not merely a system of rules, but a moral promise: that justice must be fair, equal, and accessible to all.
As Chief Judge of the Chatham County Superior Court, I am mindful that every day in our courtrooms we are called to live up to that promise.
Commemorating Dr. King’s birthday is not simply an act of remembrance; it is an act of responsibility. It asks each of us: judges, lawyers, public servants, and citizens alike to examine how we serve one another, how we protect the vulnerable, and how we ensure that justice is not just spoken, but practiced.
May we honor his legacy not only in words, but in action, striving every day to build a more just, compassionate, and unified community.

My greatest admiration and respect has always been for teachers and veterans. Teachers are charged with imparting knowledge and information that shape the minds of generations to come.
On the other hand, veterans many times have gone into harms way to protect and defend what many have learned. There may be considerable debate about what our generations are being taught. However, let's not get it twisted there are those who have and still put on the uniform to protect and defend whatever we learn.
So at 11:11am, I'm going to give due respect to those who have sacrificed for this country regardless of where we have been as a society. Do something worthwhile for them but at the least, say THANK YOU!

The day is almost done. Fireworks are going off everywhere in celebration of what was started 249 years ago --FREEDOM.
As precious as this is, as hard fought to achieve it, we have allowed ourselves to take it for granted. With all going on around us, particularly two days ago at a public mall, we need to get it together quickly.
We have the ability, we have the capacity, we have the opportunity, but do we have the will?

The ultimate sacrifice is what we honor and pay homage to today. Men and women in uniform gave their lives so that we may enjoy the freedom of today.
If you know someone who lost a love one for the cost of freedom, thank them for the service of that love one and help them honor them. If you lost a love one for the cause of freedom, I thank you for their service and my prayer for you is that the precious memories give you the peace of knowing that sacrifice was not in vain.
Too often today is thought of as another day off, or the official beginning of summer. I desperately look for those movies that signify the cost that was paid for you and I. These portrayals continue to inspire me to contribute in the small way of public service, which by no means compares to the ultimate sacrifice but lets me honor those who have.
Therefore, I proudly serve you and join you today in honoring those who have given the greatest true public service. Let's not take for granted and lose the very thing they sacrificed for.
