A throwback pic during 3rd Squadron 17th Cavalry Regiment's redeployment to Fort Drum in July of 2008, after a 15-month tour in Iraq as a part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. 3-17 CAV was activated on June 2, 1988 at Griffis AFB in Rome, NY as a part of the 10th Aviation Brigade and served as the primary cavalry squadron for 10th CAB until late 2008. Shortly after their redeployment in 2008, the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior unit was reassigned to 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division (3 CAB, 3 ID), the unit they were attached to during that 15 month tour in Iraq.
A few months later, 6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry , who was reactivated as a part of 10th CAB in 2007 after being attached to 11th Aviation Regiment and V Corps, would become 10th CAB's primary cavalry squadron.
