🎸 Talk about the ultimate wake-up call! As our Lakeview Lions arrived at school this morning, they were welcomed with an unforgettable, high-energy surprise performance right at the front doors from the incredibly talented Palatine High School Mariachi Band! 🎶

A HUGE thank you to the amazing student musicians from Palatine High School and their extraordinary director. What a wonderful way to wrap up celebrations at Lakeview Elementary School.

Stephanie Mamakos didn’t plan to follow in her mom’s footsteps as a District 54 educator. Instead, she got a degree in interior design and worked in that industry for years, but something was missing.

“My dad always said, when you get a job make sure it’s something you love because you’re going to spend most of your day there.”

So, Stephanie returned to school for an education degree, and now drives to work excited about the day ahead. Her dedication to her Enders-Salk Elementary School students is what makes her this week’s .

💙 Best part of this job?
The students. I get to work with all these wonderful people who are kind and so hard working.

💡 Advice you always give your students?
Let’s not focus on perfection, let’s focus on progress. I want them to celebrate the things they are good at and also to embrace their mistakes and know what they need to work on.

📗 Book you recommend to students?
I love books by Chris Van Allsburg, author of The Polar Express and The Stranger. His writing is different, and his illustrations are great. I love anything with a good twist.

😯 Something your students would be surprised to learn about you?
That I’m actually shy. One of the things I tell them is that I try to put myself out there and they should too.

🎉 Favorite part of the school day?
The opportunity to work with them in small groups, so I can give them 1-to-1 support.

🗒️ School supply you can’t live without?
My planner. I still use a paper planner to track things.

😊 Something that always makes you smile?
I feel like I'm smiling every day because my class is so funny. I also love when they tell me something personal. It means a lot to me that I’m a person that they want to share something with about activities outside of the academic day.

🏫 Favorite subject when you were in school?
It always depended on my teacher. I had two teachers I really loved and they were both great story tellers.

🤔 One thing you wish every student knew?
How much I care about them. I hope they know how amazing they are and how much they are capable of achieving.

We are excited to introduce you to the people who are making a difference in the lives of children through the weekly . Who will be next?

In honor of World Mental Health Day today - District 54 wants to introduce you to a new resource on our website.

This summer, District 54 created an Assistance and Support web page, filled with additional community resources provided through Schaumburg Township, local villages and other agencies. Check it out at sd54.org/page/assistance-support.

The well-being of District 54 students and staff is a top priority. All District 54 schools have full-time social workers and psychologists on staff, and families can also reach out to them for resources and assistance.
