Late Season Rainfall Raises Corn Grain Quality Concerns at Harvest

https://cropwatch.unl.edu/late-season-rainfall-raises-corn-grain-quality-concerns-harvest/

Warm, wet weather in September has raised concerns about corn grain quality as harvest gets underway across Nebraska. While some producers have begun harvesting, others are still waiting for fields to dry enough to support equipment. Reports of sprouting kernels (vivipary) and ear rot diseases are already emerging in parts of the state (Figure 1).

Elise Anderson, Ann Dobesh, KateLynn Ness, Janessa Rawhouser, and Malerie Schutt with Nebraska 4-H had SO much fun at the JAG Nebraska Leadership Development Conference! 🎉

It was a fun morning and afternoon meeting some of the hard working high school JAG Nebraska Career Association leaders! We put our active listening skills to the test and explored the importance of both empathy and active listening so we never have to wonder… “Are You Actually Listening?” 👂💬

A great day of learning, connecting, and growing together! 💚

Friday night/Saturday early morning is forecast to be 33°F.

Extension Educator Rachal Anderson has this tip:

Time your last harvest from the vegetable garden according to cold hardiness.

VERY HARDY: Asparagus, collards, endive, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, mustard, pea, potato, rhubarb, rutabaga, salsify, spinach and turnip can withstand hard frost for short periods without injury. Harvest before temperatures drop much below 25°F.

FROST TOLERANT: Beet, broccoli, brussels sprout, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, celeriac, celery, chard, Chinese cabbage, Jerusalem artichoke, onion, parsnip and radish can withstand light frost without injury. Harvest before temperatures drop below 32-28°F or cover the plants.

TENDER: Lima bean, snap bean, cucumber, eggplant, muskmelon, okra, pepper, pumpkin, summer squash, sweet corn, tomato, winter squash, sweet potato and watermelon will be killed by a frost. Harvest before temperatures drop below 36-33°F, or cover the plants.
