The Schuyler Fire Department will not be issuing any burn permits at this time. We strongly recommend no outdoor burning whatsoever, including burn barrels, burn pits, and any other open burning.

To our farming community: Please have fire extinguishers readily available, keep extra water on hand, and have a tractor and disk ready should a fire occur during harvest operations.

Thank you for your cooperation and for helping protect our community, our farmers, and our first responders.

Honoring Jeff Inselman and Raising Lung Cancer Awareness

Schuyler Volunteer Fire and Rescue is honored to recognize Jeff Inselman at this year’s pancake feed while raising awareness about lung cancer. Through this recognition, we encourage our community to learn the warning signs, understand the importance of early detection, and support individuals and families affected by this disease.

Recognize the warning signs. Lung cancer symptoms may include a cough that does not go away or gets worse, shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing up blood, persistent tiredness, unexplained weight loss, or repeated pneumonia. These symptoms can have other causes, but they should be evaluated by a healthcare provider. Lung cancer often has no symptoms in its early stages. (cdc.gov)

Talk about early detection. Lung cancer can affect people who have never smoked. Certain people at higher risk because of their age and smoking history may qualify for annual screening with a low-dose CT scan. Ask your healthcare provider whether screening is appropriate for you. If you have symptoms, seek evaluation rather than waiting for a screening appointment. (cdc.gov, cdc.gov)

Understand treatment options. Depending on the type and stage of lung cancer and a person’s overall health, treatment may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, or a combination of treatments. A cancer care team can explain which options fit each individual’s diagnosis. (cancer.gov)

Turn awareness into action. Share reliable information, encourage conversations with healthcare providers, support lung cancer research, and offer practical help to those affected—such as meals, rides to appointments, or a listening ear.

As we honor Jeff Inselman, we stand together in compassion and support for everyone affected by lung cancer. Thank you for joining Schuyler Volunteer Fire and Rescue in raising awareness and caring for our community.

Let’s show this Program support after their devastating loss only 3 short months before Christmas. 🎄

Christmas is 82 days from today. 🎄
For over 120 years the Svoboda Funeral Home building stood tall in downtown Schuyler. What many people did not know was that for the last several years, the funeral home building has also housed the Colfax County Food and Toy Corporation.
Food and Toy is a non-profit organization that provides children and families in Colfax County who have a significant need, with food, warm clothing, coats, blankets. and shoes at Christmas. Last year over 180 children were served.
At the time of the fire, Food and Toy had enough items stored at the funeral home to meet this year’s needs including but not limited to: clothing, shoes, diapers, wipes, hygiene items for families, warm blankets, and food.
In one section of the funeral home alone, Food and Toy lost 20 cases of spaghetti sauce, cereal, 20 cases of pudding, hundreds of pounds of tuna, over 250 pounds of spaghetti, 60 boxes of pancake mix, 100 jars of peanut butter, 100 jars of jelly, a mountain of macaroni and cheese, etc.
Thank you to everyone who has inquired about the funeral home and the Food and Toy Program.
For those who are not aware, local families CANNOT ask for anything, the family must be nominated by a professional (a teacher, law enforcement, probation officers, early childhood network, health and human services, etc.) who has been inside the home and can certify that, without outside help, the family will not have enough food to get through the winter break from school.
We know there are generous people everywhere. At this moment, Food and Toy is asking for the following:
1. Monetary donations to start to replace the entire 2026 inventory before Christmas. Donations are fully tax deductible and can be made out to: Colfax County Food Corporation, P. O. Box 227, Schuyler, NE 68661. You will receive a receipt for tax purposes.
2. Monetary donations can be taken to Pinnacle Bank - Schuyler and deposited directly into the Schuyler Food and Toy Corporation account. Please be sure to provide your address to receive a tax-deductible receipt.
3. A place to store any donated items. At this time we are only asking for monetary donations because we do not currently have a place to store any donated items. A secured semi trailer or other storage unit or facility would be so very much appreciated.

“Colfax County Food and Toy Organization”
