As the 250th anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga approaches, the region has an opportunity to broaden public understanding of the American Revolution.

The Edward Kingman veterans banner in the Village of Victory offers one example. Arranged by the Kelleher family, it commemorates a Massachusetts officer who died from wounds sustained during the Saratoga campaign of 1777.

His story links military records with a physical place that residents and visitors can encounter today. It also illustrates how living history can connect research into regimental organization and military service with public interpretation.

The investigation into a drawing associated with Major Judah Alden further demonstrates the importance of evaluating historical evidence carefully. Its traditional attribution to Tadeusz Kościuszko is part of the image's history, not proof of its authorship.

These are useful approaches for museums, historical societies, educators, preservation advocates, and heritage tourism partners throughout the Capital Region NY and Hudson River Valley.

The goal is not simply to commemorate a victory. It is to help visitors understand the people, evidence, and places that give that victory historical meaning.

The Old Saratoga Historical Association will present “Through Susan’s Eyes: Susan B Anthony’s Childhood in Washington County, NY” at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 22 at the Saratoga Town Hall, 12 Spring Street, Schuylerville.

This program is a retrospective on the 19 years Susan B Anthony’s family lived in the hamlet of Battenville in the Town of Greenwich on the Batten Kill. Susan’s family moved to Battenville in 1826 when Susan was only 6 years old. The area is a virtual history book of the Anthony family but until recently there was not a historic marker anywhere. Many of the events that formed Susan’s thoughts about women’s suffrage were developed in this little settlement during her childhood and young adulthood. Most people drive through this historic community without knowing its amazing history. Photos of the recently restored outside of the Battenville house will be included in the presentation

Debi Craig and Sandy McReynolds will present a Power Point presentation focusing on the numerous sites in Greenwich, Easton, Jackson, and Cambridge, NY that involved the Anthony family.

Debi Craig is past president of the Washington County Historical Society and serves as chairperson for the Washington County History Fair and the Programming Committee. She is also president of the NorthStar Historical Project which promotes Underground Railroad history in the Easton/Greenwich area and is Corresponding Secretary of the Hebron Preservation. Debi also serves as Hebron historian and is Chaplain of the Willard’s Mountain Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Sandy McReynolds is historian of the Gill Room in the Greenwich Free Library. She is also historian for the Town of Greenwich. Sandy is a member of the Easton-Greenwich Historical Association and Past Regent for the Willard’s Mountain Chapter of the DAR

The program is free and open to the public.
