Congratulations to EMCC Police Department Lt. Matthew Black and Assistant Police Chief Barry Johnson Sr., who were presented certificates today for completing a 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) certification program offered through Community Counseling Services in West Point.
Black and Johnson were among 17 area law enforcement officers recognized for completing the week-long course. The ceremony took place at Community Counseling Services' administrative complex. CIT training is a state-supported law enforcement initiative designed to equip officers with specialized knowledge, skills, and techniques to effectively respond to individuals experiencing mental health crises. The training emphasizes crisis recognition, effective communication, de-escalation strategies, and appropriate intervention techniques to promote the safety and well-being of both individuals in crisis and responding officers.
Johnson said he and Black are the first members of EMCC’s Police Force to earn the certification.
“This achievement represents a significant milestone for the EMCC Police Department and reflects the department’s ongoing commitment to professional development, proactive policing, campus safety, and compassionate responses to mental health emergencies,” Johnson said.
Congratulations to all the officers who completed the program!
