Just because it’s Saturday doesn’t mean the job stops. πŸ˜‰ Today several members are attending the Airlink Conference for continuing education hours for their EMS licensure.

Topics include Emergency Management of the Critically Burn Injured Patient, Caring for Pediatric Trauma Patients, Removing PPE When Seconds Matter, and Obstetric, Neurological, and Thermal Crisis Management.

Huge shoutout to Air Link at Regional West and all the instructors, who spent countless hours putting this together, and sacrificing their weekend to teach others!

🚨 Check your Carbon Monoxide Alarm 🚨

Year to date the City of Scottsbluff Fire Department has responded to 16 carbon monoxide incidents, an increase from the previous year.

Carbon Monoxide is known as the "Silent Killer' because it's a poisonous gas that you cannot see, taste, or smell, and may be deadly if not detected early enough.

Carbon Monoxide detectors usually expire after 7 years, and if you haven't changed out the batteries in awhile now is a great time to do that.

We also encourage all property owners to ensure their furnaces are in proper working order by having them serviced by a licensed technician. We also encourage those with fireplaces or wood burning stoves to have the chimney cleaned and inspected.

Symptoms of CO poising include mild headaches, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, shortness of breath, and feeling fatigue. Severe symptoms may include altered mental status, blurred vision, muscle weakness, seizure, loss of consciousness, and death.

If your CO alarm go off, or you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, exit the building and call 911 immediately, and do not re-enter the building until the fire department or utility company gives you the okay to do so

Due to high winds that have occurred in the area, multiple power poles have been knocked down on the far north of town resulting in a power outage.

NPPD is working on resolving the issue, however there is no ETA on repair. We ask that you refrain from calling the Communication Center regarding the outage unless you have a downed line or there is an emergency.

The screenshot below is from NPPD website, and may not be an accurate representation of all those affected. For more information please visit https://onlineaccount.nppd.com/Portal/PreOutages

On October 2nd, shortly after 12:30 AM, Scottsbluff Fire was dispatched for a smoke alarm chirping in a residence. Upon arriving on scene it was determined that there were smoke alarms that had expired and were no longer working as they should and the Fire Marshal followed up with the resident the following day on what steps needed to be taken.

Today, that same shift, B-Shift and the Fire Marshal visited the home again, this time with tools in hand. Ms. Phelps was more then appreciative of her smoke alarms being replaced with the new ones she had purchased and we even assisted her with replacing some light bulbs. We were also very appreciative of her patience and some of the travel stories she told us about.

V**e Pens, Cell Phones, Laptops, E-Scooters, E-Bikes, what do those all have in common? They all contain Lithium Ion Batteries. πŸͺ«πŸ”‹

Now these types of batteries are not new, they are just becoming more popular, and more powerful, which means they come with their own risks, and that's the focus for fire prevention week this week.

What are those risks? Fire, explosion, combination of both, toxic, deadly gases, injury, etc.

So how do you prevent that?

- Purchase listed electronic devices, or to keep it simple, if you can't read the manual because it's all in a different language, it's probably never been through any nationally recognized testing laboratory, such as UL or Intertek

- Always charge your devices using the charger provided by the manufacturer. Using an off brand charger or charging cord could allow more power to the device then what's recommended.

- Check your devices for damage or swelling. Swelling of the battery means it has failed, thus continuing to use it may lead to a fire or an explosion. Discontinue use of the battery if there is obvious damage or swelling.

Here is a video on just how much energy a damaged battery can put out:

This is the exact moment Captain Houstoun noticed the camera guy strategically placed himself in a position to capture pictures for social media. πŸ˜‰

This morning, crews taught staff with the Lied Scottsbluff Public Library how to properly use a fire extinguisher and their AED. While we hope they never have to use the knowledge provided today, we appreciate their willingness to learn and refresh their skills.
