Our fourth-grade AIG students are diving into Number the Stars by Lois Lowry! As we read, students are identifying examples of figurative language and analyzing their meanings, recording their thinking and interpretations in their student journals.

Next week, we’ll take our thinking a step further with a Socratic seminar, using Depth and Complexity questions to guide thoughtful discussions, explore multiple perspectives, and deepen our understanding of the text.

We’re building strong readers, critical thinkers, and confident communicators—one conversation at a time!

Today fourth grade AIG students discovered that mistakes don’t always have to be mistakes! After reading Beautiful Oops! by Barney Saltzberg, students explored the idea that an “oops” can become the beginning of something creative and unexpected.

Each student was given a simple torn piece of paper and challenged to turn it into a beautiful masterpiece! 🖌️✂️

We practiced creativity, flexible thinking, and looking at things from a different perspective. What started as a torn piece of paper became something completely unique—and a great reminder that sometimes our biggest “oops” can lead to our best ideas!

In AIG, we don’t always fix our mistakes…sometimes we turn them into masterpieces!

Our 5th grade AIG students have officially begun reading The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin! 🕵️‍♀️🕵️‍♂️

After reading Chapter 1, students made predictions in their student journals, using clues from the text to support their thinking. Tomorrow, we will take our thinking a step further with a Socratic Seminar, using Depth & Complexity questions to guide our conversation.

The clues are just beginning… and we can’t wait to see where our thinking takes us!

🕵️‍♀️🔎 Who Done It?! Our Gifted Readers Became Crime Scene Investigators! 🔎🕵️‍♂️

We kicked off the year in Gifted Reading with a little mystery, a lot of teamwork, and some serious critical thinking! 🧠

Students stepped into the role of forensic investigators as they worked to solve a crime at the Labor Day Parade! 🎉🚨 They examined clues, analyzed evidence, made inferences, questioned what they found, and used logical reasoning to piece together the mystery.

The best part? They couldn’t just guess the culprit—they had to prove their thinking with evidence! 🔍

What better way to start the school year than by putting those gifted minds to work?! 💡📚

Move over, Judge Judy. The AIG classroom just took fairy tales to court!

The Seagrove AIG students used the Depth and Complexity framework to dive deep into classic fairy tales examining multiple perspectives, uncovering hidden patterns, and analyzing the ethics of characters. The culmination was a mock trial in which students took on courtroom roles such as judge, bailiff, attorney, witness, etc. The arguments were fierce, the evidence was compelling, and the verdicts were... surprising!

Today in AIG, fourth graders became angle experts! 📐

Using tape, we created different angles right on our tables, and students were challenged to predict the measurements before checking their thinking with protractors. The excitement (and a few surprised faces!) when they compared estimates to actual measurements was priceless.

Through this hands-on activity, students discovered:
• How angles on a straight line add up to 180° and the full circle is 360 degrees
• Strategies to check if their measurements were accurate
• That the angles in a triangle always add up to 180°

So proud of their critical thinking, teamwork, and perseverance as they explored geometry in a fun and engaging way!

🎄🔍 A little holiday mystery in AIG today! 🔍🎄

My third grade AIG students participated in a fun and festive whodunit called “The Toy Shop Thief.” Students became detectives as they worked through clues, made inferences, and examined each suspect’s motive and alibi to determine who sabotaged Christmas and took all the gifts!

I love watching their critical thinking shine—our young investigators were fully engaged and worked together brilliantly. 🕵️‍♂️🎁✨

Great job, detectives! 🎄🔍✨
