Like many volunteer jobs, keeping a fire department running isn’t glamorous.
There’s a lot of hard work that goes on behind the scenes, which is why we have scheduled work days at the station. Today, we tackled the backbreaking job of laying out and testing over 2,150 feet of fire hose. It takes a lot of hands, and we even managed to get some free labor out of the chief’s oldest daughter, Charley. 😂
Hose testing is one of those jobs that isn’t much fun, but it’s incredibly important. Over time, hoses can develop weak spots, leaks, or damage that isn’t always visible. Testing them under pressure helps us catch those problems before we’re relying on that hose at a fire. The last thing we want is to find out a hose won’t hold up when someone’s life or property is on the line.
Those of us who didn’t pull hose tackled truck inspections, checked medical equipment expiration dates, and filed our 2027 training schedule.
And because apparently we hadn’t done enough for one Sunday, Chief Stuaan also worked on cutting and installing shelves for our new equipment racking.
There’s always something that needs done around here, but every bit of work helps keep our department ready when our community needs us. A big thank you to everyone who showed up and put in the work today!
