This week, the Seattle City Council honored the life of Horace Lorenzo Anderson Jr., and the extraordinary leadership of Donnitta Sinclair Martin, whose courage transformed personal tragedy into a movement of healing and hope. Donnitta founded We Got Us Moms, an organization dedicated to supporting, serving, uplifting, and advocating for mothers who have lost children to gun violence.

Horace's life reminds us of the importance of investing in our young people, creating opportunities for belonging and success, and building communities where every child is safe, supported, and valued.

Juneteenth recognizes and commemorates the day of June 19, 1865, when news of the end of slavery finally reached Texas. As Seattle celebrates this milestone and honors the activists driving progress across our nation, we also recognize the unfinished work of achieving true racial equity.

Reminder: Seattle City Hall is closed today in observance of Juneteenth.

On Tuesday, the Seattle City Council signed a proclamation recognizing and honoring the memory of Conner Dassa-Holland and proclaiming June 16, 2026 to be Conner Dassa-Holland Day. Conner was a beloved son, brother, student, athlete, mentor, and friend whose life embodied leadership, compassion, humility, and service to others. His intelligence, infectious smile, unwavering optimism, and commitment to helping others left an indelible mark on the City of Seattle, the Rainier Beach community, and all those fortunate enough to know him.

On May 10, 2020, Conner's life was tragically taken, leaving his family, friends, classmates, and community grieving the loss of a young man whose future held limitless promise. Conner's legacy continues through the commitment of his family, friends, educators, and community members who have dedicated themselves to ensuring that his life serves as a catalyst for healing, hope, love, and meaningful action in support of young people and safer communities.
