This August, one Seattle IT employee turned heads with a commute unlike any other. Ram Biyani's daily trip from Whidbey Island to the Seattle Municipal Tower combines a scooter, a ferry across Puget Sound, and a leg on the Sounder train, a true multi-modal journey that cuts emissions and congestion along the way.

As part of the City of Seattle's MyTrips program, Ram's story became a department-wide celebration. Colleagues joined in with scooter trivia, route voting, and polls on his biggest obstacles, turning one person's commute into a month of community spirit.
Ram's journey is a reminder that sustainable choices are within reach, and sometimes all it takes is a scooter and a plan. Read the full story to see how he did it.

๐Ÿ† Seattle just earned national recognition for putting equity at the center of city decisions.
The City's Racial and Social Equity (RSE) Index won Esri's Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award at the 2026 Esri User Conference. It's a proud moment for our whole community.
So, what is the RSE Index? It's a mapping tool that brings together data on race, ethnicity, socioeconomic conditions, and community health. City departments use it to see where disparities persist and to direct resources and programs where they're needed most.
Created in 2017, the index was a team effortโ€”built in collaboration with the Office of Planning and Community Development (OPCD), Seattle IT, the Mayor's Office, and the Office for Civil Rights. ๐Ÿค
"This award is especially meaningful because it reflects how teams across Seattle are using data to center equity in the decisions we make," said Rico Quirindongo, Director, OPCD. "We're pleased that the index is helping us move together toward more just and community-focused outcomes."

Ever tried to submit a leave request and had it vanish into an email black hole? ๐Ÿ˜…
At Seattle IT, this was a real problem. With 600+ employees and only two HR Business Partners handling every Leave and ADA request, scattered emails and chat messages made the process confusing and slow.
So our Service Design team got to work. ๐Ÿš€
They evaluated and rebuilt a PowerApp portal that brings leave, ADA, and recertification requests into one clear, easy-to-use place. Then they tested it with real employees to find out what actually worked, and what didn't.
Here's what they fixed:
โœ… Simpler navigation and smarter form design
โœ… Clear, on-brand visuals that follow City style
โœ… Confirmation steps so no one wonders "did that go through?"
The result? A big drop in back-and-forth emails to HR, and managers now point staff straight to the portal as standard practice. ๐Ÿ™Œ
Curious how human-centered design can transform a clunky process into something people love to use?

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Round two of weekend heat tips, Seattle! Let's talk about the little ones who can't always tell us they're overheating: kids and pets.
Hot days hit them harder, so a few simple habits go a long way:
๐Ÿš— Never leave children or pets in a parked car, even for a minute. Temperatures climb fast.
๐Ÿพ Walk dogs early in the morning or after sunset, and test the pavement with your hand. If it's too hot for your palm, it's too hot for their paws.
๐Ÿ‘’ Dress kids in light, loose clothing and keep sunscreen and shade handy.
๐Ÿ’ง Set out fresh water for pets indoors and out.
It also helps to know the warning signs of heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, headache, or a fast heartbeat. If you spot these, move to a cool spot, sip water, and rest. If symptoms get worse or someone seems confused, call 911 right away.
You can find more guidance, plus cooling center locations, on our Heat Safety page: https://techtalk.seattle.gov/2026/06/12/keep-cool-and-stay-safe-with-the-city-of-seattle-heat-safety-webpage-3/
How are you keeping your kids and furry friends cool this weekend? Drop your tips below. ๐Ÿ‘‡

People in the Seattle area are uniquely vulnerable to hot weather. Because the region has historically experienced mild summers, homes and businesses often lack cooling systems. To help area residents during heat waves, Seattle IT launched a webpage for heat safety on the City of Seattleโ€™s website...
