US surgeon general declares gun violence a public health emergency
The U.S. surgeon general on Tuesday declared gun violence a public health crisis, driven by the fast-growing number of injuries and deaths involving fi****ms in the country. A new billboard can be seen over I-94 near Dickerson Avenue and Harper Avenue reminding Michiganders about the state’s new gun safe storage law. The billboard was sponsored by Physicians for the Prevention of Gun Violence, an organization of doctors who are working to prevent the gun injuries and deaths that they often see in their work.
“Just as doctors routinely counsel patients about the importance of seatbelts, sunscreen, and bicycle helmets, we must also talk to our patients about firearm injury prevention. Secure storage will prevent curious toddlers from accessing fi****ms kept in their homes and will protect children and families from entirely avoidable deaths and injuries.,” said Dr. Sonya Lewis, President of Physicians for the Prevention of Gun Violence
Thanks to Lafayette American for the creative work on this!

WHAT DOES GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION LOOK LIKE?
It looks like working with local businesses to create safe, gun-free spaces.
It looks like teaching high school students facts about gun violence and how to safeguard their health.
It looks like planting daffodils to commemorate victims of gun violence.
It looks like getting the community together to walk or run to show support for taking action against gun violence.
And of course, it looks like advocating for common sense gun legislation!
We’re proud of the work we do at Washington CeaseFire!

The question we always think about at Washington CeaseFire is: "How do we move the needle with regard to reducing gun violence?"
One way we are moving the proverbial needle is by giving our health-oriented, facts-and-data based presentation on firearm violence and gun safety to high school students around the state, to rave reviews from students and educators alike.
Here we are meeting with Greg Schwab, Assistant Superintendent of the Edmonds School District to develop a plan to incorporate our presentation into the standard high school curriculum!
