We protect public health and enhance the environment by treating and recycling wastewater.

In the 1950s, wastewater flowed largely untreated into Lake Washington and Puget Sound and many rivers and smaller lakes, fouling water and making a sullied mess of local beaches. In 1958 the voters created Metro and developed a regional wastewater treatment system based on watersheds as opposed to political boundaries. Shortly after Metro was formed, construction began on the county's two existin

Annual checkups keep us healthy. And with corrosive wastewater + aging pipes, our sewer system needs checkups too!

That’s where our conveyance inspectors come in — with a robot sidekick. They drop into dark maintenance holes to inspect pipes, monitor conditions, and catch problems before they turn into major headaches.

Here's our crew working in City of Redmond, Washington -Government earlier this spring!

Traditional 15th anniversary gifts call for crystal. In the wastewater world, we’d say membrane filters! Built in 2011, our Brightwater Treatment Plant near Woodinville uses long, straw-like fiber membranes to remove bacteria, viruses, and micro-sized particles left after the secondary treatment process. The result? “Crystal” clean water! 💧

We’re now replacing the plant’s state-of-the-art membrane filtration system after it reached the end of its useful life. Thanks to the dedicated care and maintenance by our staff, the original system lasted five years longer than the manufacturer’s 10-year lifespan rating!

The new ultrafiltration membrane filters are even more efficient and advanced, allowing us to treat the same amount of water with just 14 cassettes instead of the original 20. Cassettes are large metal frames that hold thousands of membrane fibers. This upgrade will also allow us to clean even more water in the future without expanding the plant’s footprint.
