Hi everyone,
My name is Naomi Snow and I serve as the ASUW President. I am writing because students across the country, especially low-income, working, and first-generation students, are at risk of losing critical support.
The Fiscal Year 2025 Budget Reconciliation Bill has passed the House of Representatives and is now moving to the Senate. This bill includes some of the most severe proposed cuts to student aid in recent history.
If passed, it would:
• Eliminate subsidized undergraduate and Grad PLUS loans
• Cap financial aid based on a national median cost rather than actual college expenses
• Impose new Pell Grant restrictions that most current recipients would not meet
• Cut an estimated 698 billion dollars from Medicaid and 267 billion dollars from SNAP and EBT
• Set a 200,000 dollar lifetime cap on federal student loans, including Parent PLUS
• Eliminate most income-driven repayment plans and deferments for hardship
These changes would make college harder to afford and complete, and would disproportionately harm students already navigating financial barriers.
This is a priority for ASUW. We are committed to protecting students and have created a centralized hub with tools and resources to help you take action.
Here is how you can get involved:

Sincerely,
Naomi Snow (she/her)

ASUW stands in solidarity with the Black Student Union of UW Seattle and all Black students, faculty, and staff.
Activism and integrity are essential to making change, and we commend BSU’s hard work and perseverance.
Our UW community must reckon with its history as a racist institution. Now is the time to begin that process.
The ASUW Board of Directors insists that UW administration acknowledge and implement the necessary steps to successfully apply the seven demands identified by the Black Student Union.
1. Break all ties with SPD
2. Disarm & divest from UWPD
3. Allocate funds to Black RSOs and the American Ethnic Studies Department
4. Hire more Black faculty
5. Increase DIV credit requirements
6. Remove statues of racist figures
7. Fund and expand mental health resources for UW students

ASUW presents "Black Mental Health Matters: A Conversation with Charisse Williams, PhD." The first portion will be about sharing resources and talking about mental health, followed by a Q&A.
From Williams' UW counseling page, "I help people make meaning out of their suffering, which is often caused by external forces like oppression and trauma. I view each person as a holistic, cultural human being that has unique and common experiences that have shaped worldview and values."
Special thanks to ASUW leadership including the Black Student Commission, Rainy Dawg Radio, and UWs Counseling center.
