πππππππππ πππππ ππππΌπ πππΏπΌππ: Following thunderstorms that brought close to 300 lightning strikes into the Rogue Valley over the weekend, firefighters have extinguished 13 fires that were naturally sparked by the storm. The fires ranged in size from 1/100th of an acre to nine acres that affected both Bureau of Land Management and ODF-protected land in Jackson and Josephine counties. At this time, only two fires remain in mop-up status.
The largest is the Heppsie Mountain Fire, located on BLMβs Heppsie Mountain south of Highway 140 and east of Lakecreek. As of Wednesday morning, the fire is 95% mopped up. Firefighters will remain on the fire to complete this work and thoroughly check the area before leaving. Additionally, resources will continue to monitor the area for smoke for the following three days after declaring the fire 100% mopped up.
The other fire that resources are still dedicated to is the Palmer Peak Fire, located approximately 3.5 miles northwest of McKee Bridge in the Applegate. Firefighters have held the fire at four acres and have mopped 50-feet into the perimeter of the fire. Resources will remain assigned to this incident and push forward to complete mop up operations.
All other fires from this storm are 100% lined and mopped up. ODF remains engaged in searching for any potential holdover fires from lightning strikes with its camera detection system, boots-on-the-ground patrolling and recon flights when possible. Holdover lightning-caused fires can smolder for days to weeks and will ignite in the right conditions. With temperatures predicted to heat up by the end of the week, new fires from these storms may begin to burn. All resources will remain ready to respond to any report of fire.
Extreme Fire Danger remains in effect in Jackson and Josephine counties, and current regulations can be found here: https://swofire.com/public-fire-restrictions/. Please help firefighters by following all regulations, designed to decrease human-caused fires, as they continue to battle natural fires that canβt be prevented.
This will be the final update on these incidents unless conditions significantly change.
