The 2024 MAAFA!!!

MAAFA COMMEMORATION CEREMONY August 29, 2021, 5:30 a.m. @ Madonna Beach

The MAAFA [or great tragedy in Kiswahili] is a term to describe the horror of the transatlantic slave experience. It is also a sacred time for Black people to gather with our elders, our children, our youth and our adults to celebrate our ancient African heritage, heal from centuries of anti-Black racial terror, and build on our powerful legacy of Black liberation.

This year's Maafa Commemoration Ceremony is intended to be a safe space for Black people to educate, inspire, reflect, grieve and release trauma that we have been carrying - especially during this global health pandemic that has disproportionately harmed our Black communities.

We encourage those who can to wear white attire. We also encourage folks to bring a picture of a Black ancestor(s) to share on our altar of remembrance.

In an effort to maintain health and safety, everyone is asked to wear masks and maintain some physical distance.

We will gather at Madrona Beach located at 800 Lake Washington Blvd. Seattle, Wa at 5:30a.m.

Hope to see you there! Questions can be directed to the Village of Hope at [email protected].

CALLING Black people in the Pacific Northwest! It is time for us to gather at the edge of the water for our annual Maafa Commemoration Ceremony. The Maafa [or great tragedy in Kiswahili] is a sacred time for Black people to gather and celebrate our ancient African heritage, heal from centuries of anti-Black racial terror, and build on our powerful legacy of Black resistance & Black liberation. As part of our West African spiritual-ceremonial tradition, you are encouraged to WEAR WHITE when you attend Maafa. This year's Maafa Commemoration Ceremony is intended to be a safe space for Black people to grieve and to release trauma that we have been carrying - especially during this global health pandemic that has disproportionately harmed our Black communities.
