Very early this morning, the King County One Night Count was conducted. Sadly, volunteers counted 4,505 men, women and children trying to survive without shelter throughout King County. This represents a 19% increase from last year. This in spite of the fact that many traditionally high-count areas were not entered this year due to being closed off as a result of the recent tragic events in the area known as the Jungle.
Catholic Community Services staff and associates have the most volunteers of any other single agency that participates in the One Night Count. Our agency is directly responsible for staffing 11 count areas.
There is still an opportunity to help out. Each year, many of us choose to help get the word out about the number of people found during the count, and to educate our family and friends about what this number represents, by changing our profile picture on Facebook to a simple graphic with the number on it for one week. Some make their own, others use one they see. It is a powerful way to promote critically needed community conversation around the issue of homelessness in our region. Each year, more and more people get their information through their social media contacts. It really does make a difference in helping people understand the issues in our community.

The student's at Sandpoint Elementary are amazing!
They chose Rose of Lima to benefit from their community service project. The students held a hygiene drive and collected various items that you and I might take for granted. They collected laundry detergent, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, feminine products, toilet paper, shampoo/conditioner, dish soap, deodorant, paper towels, pots/pans etc...
Today I had the pleasure of meeting the Student Council as they presented Rose of Lima with all they had collected. It was inspiring to meet these compassionate children that worked so hard to make the drive successful.
Special Thanks to Michelle Raine and Christina Janssen of Sandpoint Elementary.
