The Hudson House was constructed in 1902. House builder Edward Hudson (b. ca 1844) and family moved to Seattle at the dawn of the new century. He was drawn to the city by the influx of new residents seeking homes. Edward born in Massachusetts, by 1866 lived in Indiana where he met his wife Mary (b. By 1901, they had moved west and settled in the Green Lake neighborhood. At the beginning of summer
1902 the Seattle building department issued Hudson a permit for his own home, a 26x26 foot cottage. By the end of the year, the Hudsons moved in and remained there for about nine years. For awhile, daughter Eva (b. 1867), a music teacher, and son in law Albert McCoy (b. 1872), a street railway electrician, boarded in the house. In the early 1910s, the Hudsons moved to the Loyal Heights neighborhood. From 1919 through the 1930s Alfred W. Woodland; during World War II, son Frederick W. Woodland and his wife Margaret inherited the house and lived there; after World War II through the early 1960s Samuel and Brenta Abbey occupied the house. Joseph J. Ryan purchased the house in 1965. The 1975 Historic Seattle Survey of the Greenlake neighborhood listed the house as Significant to the Community. In 1979 the Seattle Historic Resources Survey inventoried the house. The residence appears to meet City of Seattle Landmark criteria due to the age of the structure (over 100 years old) and minimal alterations. This is the only residence with a Mansard roof located for the pre 1906 Early Seattle Building Survey. Turret located on southwest corner of residence. West and north elevations have a total of three gable dormers and south elevation has a shed dormer. Porch wraps around the entire west and south elevations with circular columns supporting the shed roof.
