Friends of Martha Washington Park

Hi Everyone,
This coming Sunday, from 10-2pm we’ll be planting all the wonderful plants that we got from Green Seattle Partnership. We’ll be planting everything from grasses to trees in many different areas of the park. It should be a lot of fun.

Please come join us if you can.

Planting season is almost upon us. This October we’ll be planting camas and other bulbs in the oak slope and in November we will be adding understory and other plants to the north forest and oak slope.
At the upcoming September work party we’ll be preparing for the bulb planting by cutting down this year’s growth in the oak understory gardens and making sure that other areas are ready for new plants.

Planting is always a busy time but it’s also a fun time with lots of new plants and the promise of new growth in the spring. I hope you can join us for one or more work parties.

Here’s the schedule:

Sunday September 12, 10am-2pm preparing areas for planting, including clearing the demo garden and the oak understory areas.
Sunday October 10, 10am-2pm Bulb planting. Lots of new camas bulbs plus a few special species.
Sunday November 14, 10am-12pm Planting forbs, mostly in the north forest, but we’ll also be adding 8 new Garry oaks to the top of the oak slope.

Hi all, hope you are well.

Martha Washington Park is a very soggy place right now, so we’ll start working there in March.

I saw a coyote there last month, so we’re attracting good company.

Let’s plan on the second Sunday every month, 10 am to 1 pm, beginning in March as our regular project. That’s March 14th for starters. Some of the wildflowers will be opening by then.

If this date does not work for you, please let me know.

We will follow Seattle's COVID guidelines for work projects.

This Saturday, Sept 28, we will be hosting 20 incoming Seattle Pacific University students at Martha Washington Park. This program, CityQuest, is something we have hosted for the last 5 years and it’s a great chance to work with students and introduce them to the restoration work we are doing.

We need a couple more leads, i.e. experienced volunteers, to help direct the students. The students arrive between 10:45 and 11:00 so you would need to be there by 10:35 to get ready.

If any of you can make it, please let me know.

I hope to see you at Martha Washington Park, this Sunday, September 8th, any time between 10 am and 2 pm. We meet a the tool box on the north side of the park.

We’ll be admiring the late blooming asters and pentstemons, planning tasks for 9/28 when SPU students will join us, and other sundry tasks like watering (even if it’s raining) and weeding.

This Sunday, from 10-2 we are going to tackle two key tasks --

— We will be moving some wood chips into an area that was recently cleared of blackberries and ivy.

— And we will be moving some of our slash piles to make way for a new (temporary but long term) fence that will protect our plantings while they grow.

We could use a couple of extra wheelbarrows and pitch forks, so anyone who can bring one please contact me.

Other than that, please come out and enjoy what should be a fine, productive day at the park!!!!
