“Bird migration—it is the visible breath and life of the planet,” Alison Holloran, Living River.

Migrations are essential to many birds’ survival. Winds carry them to their breeding grounds in spring, then back to their wintering grounds in the fall, but the rivers, wetlands, and lakes of the Colorado River Basin sustain them along the way.

“The Arctic is not a blank white nothingness. It is a vibrant world of color, sound, and life and a home to countless species.”

America’s Arctic is a glimpse of how life on Earth has evolved and what landscapes looked like before industrial development. But its climate is changing twice as quickly as anywhere else, and further climate change and development will only speed this up.

As developers begin to request permits for seismic testing, submit your public comment in opposition at the link in bio.

ORCA FAST FACTS!

🫍Orcas are the largest members of the dolphin family.

🫍Transient orcas eat marine mammals, but resident orcas almost entirely rely on salmon.

🫍Resident orcas are split into two main groups: southern and northern populations.

🫍The northern Southern Residents are centered in Canadian waters and rarely sighted in Washington State.

🫍The endangered Southern Resident orcas have three pods: J, K, and L pods.

🫍Transients and residents don’t interbreed and aren’t known to socialize despite overlapping ranges.

The Puget Sound is home to thousands of marine and bird species!

🐟As of 2015, scientists had identified 253 species of fish in the Sound and Salish Sea, 37 of which were at risk or vulnerable to extinction.

🐟More than 37 species of sea stars live between the shore and 100+ feet below the water’s surface.

🐟All types of wetlands—bog, swamp, and marsh—contribute to the Puget Sound’s health and are home to many wildlife species.
