Sarah Josepha Hale, often called the “Mother of Thanksgiving,” played a crucial role in transforming the holiday from a regional New England tradition into a nationwide celebration. As the influential editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book, the most widely read magazine of the 19th century, Hale used her platform to promote the idea of an annual national day of gratitude. Beginning in the 1840s, she wrote persuasive editorials, published holiday recipes, and highlighted Thanksgiving customs to encourage families across the country to adopt the celebration.
For more than two decades, Hale tirelessly campaigned for Thanksgiving to become an official national holiday. She wrote letters to governors, senators, and five U.S. presidents, arguing that a shared day of thanks would strengthen national unity—especially important in the years leading up to the Civil War. Her efforts intensified during the war, as she believed a nationwide Thanksgiving could help heal divisions and remind Americans of their common values.
Hale’s long campaign finally succeeded in 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation establishing Thanksgiving as a national holiday to be observed on the last Thursday of November. Her persistence and influence had a direct impact on this momentous decision, and today her contributions are widely recognized as essential to the Thanksgiving tradition. Through her advocacy, writing, and cultural leadership, Sarah Josepha Hale helped shape the holiday into the cherished national celebration it is today.
