Last week, we held our Annual Housing Celebration, honoring the vital work of creating affordable and healthy homes in Seattle. We announced our 2024 funding awards for rental housing, shared successes from our homeownership program, and celebrated the anti-displacement and environmental efforts of our HomeWise program. 🏠

The event opened with the incredible Chief Seattle Club Drummers, followed by remarks from OH Director Maiko Winkler-Chin, Mayor Bruce Harrell, and Chief Seattle Club's Interim Co-Executive Director James Lovell.

The event featured stories from individuals like Samajee Clewis, a graduate of Catholic Community Services’ ASSET Program, and Rita Latta, a recipient of our HomeWise Home Repair Grant. Their journeys remind us of why this work is so important.

Groundbreaking new developments are underway in Phinney Ridge! The Seattle Office of Housing is proud to support Homestead CLT in constructing 38 new permanently affordable condos at 5819 Phinney Ave N. (Woodland View) and 6109 Phinney Ave N. (Nest).

“That means 38 permanently affordable homes for income-qualified households; for our teachers, health-care workers, retail service workers, government and nonprofit employees whose income is just a fraction of what’s needed to buy a median-priced home in Phinney Ridge,” says Maiko Winkler-Chin, Director of the Seattle Office of Housing.

The inspiration behind Woodland View comes from Chakorn Phisuthikul and Marilyn Heinemann, who generously donated their property to create lasting affordable housing in their neighborhood. The couple share the vision that modest-income people will have the opportunity to find an affordable home in the community where they work. Chakorn, an architect committed to neighborhood integrity, and Marilyn, a former schoolteacher, hope their gift will inspire others.

“We’re not famous philanthropists; we’re just people who’ve worked hard and saved. We believe there are others like us, and we hope they are inspired to contribute what they can to affordable housing,” says Marilyn.
