Slow Down Move Over Washington Awareness Event & Procession

One roadway. One mission. Everyone deserves to make it home.

Join Slow Down Move Over Washington and roadside safety partners from across Washington for a statewide awareness event dedicated to protecting the people who work on and respond to our roadways.

We are bringing together tow operators, law enforcement, fire and EMS, WSDOT Incident Response, road crews, emergency responders, and community members to raise awareness about Washington’s Slow Down Move Over law and the importance of giving roadside workers and stranded motorists the space they need to stay safe.

Why this matters:
Our roadside community continues to face heartbreaking dangers. In 2025, Washington State Trooper Tara-Marysa Guting was killed in Tacoma. More recently, a tow operator was struck in Belfair on September 13, followed by troopers struck in Kennewick on October 7, Kittitas County on October 21, and Federal Way on October 22, 2026.

These incidents are a sobering reminder that roadside safety is not just a professional concern. It affects families, friends, coworkers, and entire communities.

We cannot change what has already happened, but we can work together to prevent future tragedies. Through awareness, education, and action, we can remind drivers that a few moments of caution can make the difference between someone getting home safely and a family receiving devastating news.

Event schedule:
9:00 AM | Morning Gathering & Vehicle Staging
Join us at the Tacoma Dome parking lot as participants arrive and vehicles gather from across Washington. Connect with fellow roadside professionals, meet participating agencies, and stand together for a shared mission.
11:45 AM | Drivers’ Meeting
Approximately 11:50 AM | Group Photo
12:00 PM | Awareness Procession
Participating vehicles will depart for a planned procession. The final route and any traffic-control arrangements will be shared once confirmed.
Approximately 12:45 PM | Expected Return

Vehicles are expected to return to the Tacoma Dome for an opportunity to gather and connect before departing.
Times are approximate and may be adjusted as final route and safety coordination is completed.

Everyone is welcome!

You do not have to participate in the procession to be part of this event.

If you are unable to join the drive, we invite you to come to the Tacoma Dome in the morning, stand alongside our roadside community, meet the people behind this important work, and help us spread the message. Community members, families, businesses, and supporters are all welcome.

This event is about more than a lineup of vehicles. It is about the people behind the lights, the families waiting at home, and our shared responsibility to protect everyone on the roadside.

⚠️ ANOTHER TROOPER INJURED. PLEASE SLOW DOWN AND MOVE OVER. ⚠️

A Washington State Patrol trooper was injured after a vehicle struck his marked patrol car while he was assisting with a lane closure on westbound I-90 near Exit 63, about 10 miles west of Roslyn.

The patrol vehicle had its emergency lights activated. The other driver failed to yield, and the trooper, 24-year-old Jaden Siller, was transported to Kittitas Valley Healthcare with injuries.

🚨 Slow down when approaching an emergency or roadside scene.
➡️ Move over when safe and possible.
❤️ Stay alert. Give responders room. Help everyone get home safely.

🚨 SLOW DOWN. MOVE OVER. EVERY TIME.

Just before 2 AM this morning, a Washington State Patrol vehicle was struck on NB I-5 at S 272nd in Federal Way while troopers were blocking the HOV lane for another crash.

Thankfully, the trooper was outside the vehicle and was not injured. The other driver was arrested for DUI.

🟠 Slow down when approaching emergency or roadside vehicles.
🔵 Move over when it is safe and possible to do so.
🚫 Never drive impaired.

Every person on the side of the road deserves to make it home safely. Their safety is in your hands. Washington, do your part.

Did you know all 50 states have some type of Move Over law?

Whether it’s firefighters, emergency medical services, tow truck operators, WSDOT and other work crews, or law enforcement personnel, when you see flashing lights on the roadside or in a work zone, Washington law requires you to slow down and/or move over when it’s safe to do so.

Honoring the fallen Tow Operators in Washington

Slow Down & Move Over, Help Save Lives!

These lives were carelessly and unnecessarily taken while our state's Slow Down & Move Over and impaired driving laws were ignored.

The towing industry remains the 3rd deadliest job in the nation (according to Labor & Statistics records).

We must unite together to call for enforcement of these important laws and share the improvements that must be made in order to bring towers, other first responders, and roadside workers home at the end of their shifts.

“While investigating a collision on 182 near milepost 129, (16 miles south of Kennewick) a driver failed to observe the emergency lights up ahead and collided with the patrol car.
The trooper was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
After further investigation, the driver of the GMC that collided with the patrol car was arrested for DUI.
If you’re on the road and see emergency lights up ahead, slow down and move over. Impaired driving continues to be the number one factor in many of the fatal collisions we investigate in Washington. Make the responsible choice to never drink and drive.”

See or hear sirens? 🚨 MOVE OVER!

Drivers must yield the right-of-way to emergency vehicles, including ambulances, when they are approaching with lights and sirens activated.

Pull over to the right-hand side of the road and stop until the emergency vehicle has passed.
