Cherokee Ranch & Castle Foundation is a non-profit organization that is committed to preserving the natural environment, enhancing cultural life in Colorado, and providing educational opportunities devoted to western heritage, wildlife and the arts. Cherokee Ranch & Castle includes land that originally belonged to two separate homesteads in the late 1890s: the Flower Homestead and the Blunt Homestead. The Johnson Family moved from the East and purchased the Flower Homestead in 1924 and built the 1450s Scottish-style Castle. Tweet purchased adjacent land that had been the Blunt Homestead and renamed both pieces of land Cherokee Ranch, which today includes 3,100 acres of natural beauty and wildlife. In 1996, Tweet worked with Douglas County to protect Cherokee Ranch through a Conservation Easement. The Foundation holds the deed to Cherokee Ranch which serves as a Cultural and Educational Hub. Cherokee Ranch & Castle provides a wide variety of programs including: Educational Castle Tours and Afternoon Teas, and a wide variety of K-12 and Adult Educational Programs focusing on, for example, Culture and the Arts, Environmental Science, Colorado and Western History and Heritage, Wildlife, Ranching, etc. We are open to the public by reservations or appointment only.

Yesterday, we were delighted to welcome members of the Highlands Ranch Historical Society for a special tour of the castle!

A big thank-you to our wonderful docents, Jan Abbott, Jan Behler, and Jean Olson, for leading the tours, and to our gracious hosts, Jeralyn O’Doughtery and Lorraine Epstein, for helping make the visit so special.

Guests also had the opportunity to hear fascinating stories shared by Meg Anderson and John Lake, bringing the castle’s history to life and making the experience even more memorable.

We are so grateful to everyone who helped make this visit a success and to our guests for their interest in history and the stories that connect us to the past. ❤️

History has a way of bringing the past to life, and this full-page advertisement from June 1979 offers a fascinating look at Cherokee Ranch’s Santa Gertrudis cattle program.

The advertisement announced a private treaty sale of horned and polled bulls and cows, highlighting individual bloodlines known for their bone, scale, and gentleness.

Santa Gertrudis cattle have a special place in American ranching history, and this advertisement offers a glimpse into the breeding program and ranching traditions associated with Cherokee Ranch nearly five decades ago.

A special thank-you to Scooter Sanchez of Red Doc Farms for sharing this wonderful piece of history with us! We appreciate the opportunity to preserve and share these glimpses into Cherokee Ranch’s agricultural heritage. ❤️🐂

Wildlife Wednesday at Cherokee Ranch & Castle!

What a magnificent sight! This massive bull elk was photographed on the ranch just the other day, reminding us of the incredible wildlife that calls Cherokee Ranch home.

Despite the challenging drought conditions over the past year, the elk herd at Cherokee Ranch remains strong and thriving. Seeing these impressive animals on the landscape is a wonderful reminder of the resilience of wildlife and the importance of preserving the natural spaces they depend on.

There’s always something special about witnessing these majestic animals in their natural habitat. We’re grateful to share this beautiful moment with our community! 💚

Have you spotted elk on Cherokee Ranch? Share your sightings with us in the comments!

The entrance transformation at Cherokee Ranch & Castle is almost complete, and we’re excited to share the latest progress!

It’s been a busy week at the entrance! The new curb and gutter were installed last week, the columns were completed on Sunday, and today, the new pavement at the entrance was finished! 🎉

Each step brings us closer to completing this important improvement and welcoming visitors through our refreshed entrance.

While there are still a few finishing touches to go, we’re getting very close to the finish line! We can’t wait to share the final results with you.

Swipe through the photos to see the latest progress and how far we’ve come since our last update on September 18!

A peaceful evening at Cherokee Ranch & Castle. 🦌 As the elk graze, their bugles echo across the landscape. Nature has a way of reminding us to slow down and simply take it all in. 🌾
