The Selma High Library recently hosted a meet-and-greet between students in the Careers with Children CTE class and students in Mrs. Denver’s and Mrs. Espinosa’s SDC classes! The activity began with a CTE student reading the book “Billy Blue Is Stuck in Goo,” followed by students working together to follow directions and create their own goo. The CTE class planned and prepared the activity to promote inclusive learning and build relationships among students. This is the first of many activities the classes have planned together!

UNITED in kindness, acceptance, and inclusion! 🧡 On Wednesday, October 21, schools across the district came together to celebrate National Unity Day, part of National Bullying Prevention Month! Students and staff wore orange to show their support, shared bracelets with messages of kindness, signed and recited Unity Day pledges, and created Unity Day trees and displays across campuses.

Through these activities, our schools sent a powerful message that kindness matters, everyone belongs, and together we can make a difference!

From the classroom to the newsroom! Jackson Elementary fifth- and sixth-grade students are getting hands-on experience in journalism and broadcasting through their very own weekly newscast, the Husky News Network!

From reporting and conducting interviews to operating cameras and anchoring the news, these young journalists are building confidence, communication skills, and teamwork while keeping their school community informed and connected.

ABC30 Action News recently visited Jackson to go behind the scenes with the student news team. Check it out!

Improving mathematics achievement is a top priority for Selma Unified. With math continuing to be the lowest-scoring academic area across California and within our district, Superintendent Gomes recently stepped into the classroom to experience firsthand the learning taking place.

Superintendent Gomes took over Mr. Mitsuoka’s 4th period 7th grade math class at Abraham Lincoln Middle School, leading students through a lesson on using tape diagrams to represent unknown values.

This experience provided an opportunity for Superintendent Gomes to connect directly with students and staff, gain a deeper understanding of classroom instruction, and see firsthand the strategies being used to support student learning.

Selma Unified remains committed to improving student outcomes in mathematics and ensuring all students develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to succeed.

Making an impact beyond the football field! Selma High quarterback Adam Soria was recently featured in EdSource for his efforts to raise awareness about su***de prevention and encourage others to ask for help when they need it. Selma Unified is committed to providing a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for all of our students, regardless of their immigration status. We want to assure families that our district has clear protocols and Board Policies in place to protect students from any form of law enforcement agency requesting student access or information without either parent consent, court order, or judicial subpoena.

In line with the California Privacy Act law, Selma Unified Board Policy states clearly that Police Departments, Sheriff, Homeland Security, Immigration Customs Enforcement Agents, etc., cannot request student information or walk into a school or classroom without parent consent, court order, or judicial subpoena. Student information is protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

We continue to meet frequently with local law enforcement and the Fresno County Office of Education. Families are encouraged to update their child’s emergency contact information, connect with community organizations familiar with civil immigration rights, and create a family care plan, designating trusted adults as caregivers.

Selma Unified schools are welcoming, supportive, and safe places for all students and families. We want our students and families to know they are supported in our schools and that the safety and well-being of our students will always be a top priority.

We are aware of social media posts circulating regarding potential student walkouts on Tuesday, October 13, related to recent immigration enforcement activity. We want to make sure students and families have clear information about expectations during the school day and important safety considerations.

Please take a moment to review the information in this post.

A sweet way to learn about the brain! 🍬 Selma High students in Introduction to Psychology recently explored the nervous system and the connection between biology and psychology. As they learned how neurons transmit messages throughout the body, students put their knowledge into action by creating and labeling neuron diagrams using different types of candy. This lesson was a fun, hands-on way to bring psychology concepts to life!
