"BBCF shows how philanthropy can do more than provide resources. By trusting local knowledge and sharing decision-making with residents, it can help communities build the leadership and capacity to shape their own future."

We appreciate our BBCF spotlight from Concerned Citizens Defending Democracy. They took a deep dive into our work and have described and shared about it so clearly.

What happens when communities themselves help decide where resources should go and what their future should look like?

Our latest Story of Local Activism (SOLA) features the Black Belt Community Foundation (BBCF), a Selma-based community foundation serving 12 counties across Alabama’s Black Belt since 2004.

Through resident-led grantmaking, grassroots leadership, education, health, arts, racial healing, and community partnerships, BBCF puts local voices at the center of decisions about local needs and opportunities.

In 2026 alone, BBCF invested $358K through 150 Community, Arts and Festival Grants across the region, supporting locally driven solutions and strengthening community organizations.

BBCF shows how philanthropy can do more than provide resources. By trusting local knowledge and sharing decision-making with residents, it can help communities build the leadership and capacity to shape their own future.
