A Day of Service. A Day of Remembrance.
Today, the Selma AmeriCorps Neighborhood Development Initiative observed the 9/11 National Day of Service by honoring our heroes through both remembrance and service.
The day began and ended with AmeriCorps members putting the spirit of service into action at the home of Sgt. Benny L. Tucker, recognized as one of the first African Americans to join the Alabama Army National Guard. Members assisted with minor home repairs and improvements as a tangible way to say thank you for his service to our country and our state.
Members also participated in the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, recognizing the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honoring the first responders, military members, veterans, and public servants who have dedicated their lives to serving others.
September 11 reminds us that remembrance is more than reflection—it is also action. Today, our AmeriCorps members demonstrated what it means to honor those who served by continuing to serve others.
We will never forget. We will always serve. Together, we build a stronger Selma.
