🕊️ Friends, neighbors, and communities from near and far are holding a vigil in remembrance of Tasia Fortune THIS SATURDAY, August 29th at 5 PM. Please join us as we honor and celebrate her life.
Almost exactly one year after Trey Reed’s mysterious death by hanging at Delta State University, Tasia’s life was taken on August 3rd, under suspicious circumstances.
She, too, was found hanged behind an abandoned home located on Road of Remembrance in Jackson, MS. Since her death her mother, Christy, remains her biggest advocate. Though she does not want the speculation surrounding her daughter’s tragic death to overshadow the impact of her life, she has been explicitly clear — Tasia did not do this to herself. She wants a thorough, transparent investigation, clear answers, and justice for her daughter.
In the weeks since, no cause of death has been publicly released and it remains undetermined “pending investigation,” according to Jackson Police. For Black Mississippians, especially, this lack of urgency and clarity is painfully familiar. The history of racial violence against black people and black communities is hard to ignore, even in this context. The reality is that the national oppression facing black people daily are inherently tied to and a continuation of racist legislation, racist police terror, and a legacy of the Jim Crow south.
These and many other exploitative barriers will certainly impact the development and outcome of the investigation and handling of Tasia’s case. Black liberation as a whole requires the end of billionaire rule and total dismantling of the capitalist institution.
Tasia Fortune was more than a headline — she was a mother, she was loved, and she deserves to still be alive. Now, Tasia’s family deserves the truth and communities in Jackson deserve transparency and urgency — no silence, no dismissals, and no excuses!
