Saturday, October 17, is National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day, urging us to tackle the digital mess that accumulates on our computer or digital device screens. Take a moment to organize files, delete old shortcuts, and refresh your digital workspace for improved efficiency and peace of mind. Grandparents and parents, use this reminder as a chance to clear out the 600 pictures your little ones took on your phone when you thought it was cute or didn't see it happening. Delete that phone app that hasn't been used in over a year. Now's your chance! Reclaim your digital space (and storage)! Obviously, with any form of recovery, the first step is admitting you have a problem. You can do this. We believe in you.

Of course, as a Next Search Catalog card holder, that number is closer to 1,000,000, right? The concept - and the feeling - however, is the same!

Friday, October 16, 2026 is National Mammography Day, in connection with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We get it. It's not a fun or comfortable test to have done, but mammograms are vital for early identification and treatment access that improve cancer survival exponentially compared to late diagnosis scenarios. And, surprise gentlemen! You're not immune just because you're a dude! If you notice a new or growing lump, hard knot, or thickening in the breast tissue or underarm, or you have unexplained swelling, skin dimpling, or redness in these areas, talk to your healthcare provider and get the screening process started! This goes double if you have a personal or family history of cancer and especially breast cancer. The life you safe in sharing this early detection awareness, might just be your own.

Tuesday, October 13, is English Language Day! But this isn't your embarrassing racist uncle's "Your in America, speak 'Merican!" English Language Day, this one has a legitimate historical context and everything!
Per National Today: "The English Project launched the world’s first-ever English Language Day on October 13 in 2009. English Language Day is celebrated to commemorate October 13, 1362, when Parliament was opened for the first time by a speech in English, instead of French. In the same Parliament, a Statute of Pleading was approved that allowed members in debate to use the English language. This made English the official language of law and law-making."
Which, coupled with heavy colonialism world wide, is how English became such a prominent facet of international trade and communication. Is it the most important or only language out there? Far from it. But it does have a prominence in modern global networking that makes it worth celebrating. So, crack open a dictionary, thank a teacher, or just read a book to celebrate the English language today!

Monday, October 12 is National Native American Day (or Indigenous Peoples' Day). On this day we encourage learning about the First Nations people, the traditions and cultural diversity that exists beyond the common stereotypes, and the contributions that their heritage and peoples have shared throughout history, both precolonial and today.

The histories run broad and deep, so it's best to get started now!

“Declaration 1776: The Big Bang of Modern Democracy” is a traveling exhibit that arrives TODAY, Saturday, October 10, and will remain on display in the main library wing during regular business hours through November 7, 2026. This exhibit, sponsored by Humanities Kansas, talks about the Declaration of Independence, what made it unique to its time, what it meant to the founding of the United States as a free and sovereign nation, and what impact it made world wide as a model for other countries to establish their own independence. The count down begins. Don’t miss this unique and informational opportunity while it’s still here!
