Happy Saturday, Sequim!

We have so much to share that it would take weeks of posts to show you all of the amazing food and drink options our incredible staff have been working on. Here’s just a small taste of what’s coming soon as part of Phase I of The Granary Project!

This week, our focus is on staff training, fine-tuning our systems, and getting everyone comfortable in the space. We fully expect to be ready to fully open our doors after the weekend during Columbus Day week!

We’ll begin with a limited menu and limited hours for the first few weeks while our team gets fully familiar with everything. As we settle in, we’ll continue expanding both our menu and our hours later in the month.

We are incredibly excited to finally share this new space with Sequim and welcome you through the doors of The Coffee Mill!

They grow up so fast, don’t they? 🦉
One day our little owlets are wolfing down field mice in a single gulp (bones and all!), and the next they’re flying the coop! Our two fledglings from The Granary’s loft nest box are now occasional visitors to their birthplace. They’ll keep dropping by for a few more months as they perfect their hunting skills before heading off to find their own territories.

Fun barn owl facts:
• These silent flyers have heart-shaped faces that act like satellite dishes for super-hearing — they can pinpoint a mouse rustling in the grass even in total darkness!
• One owl can eat ~1,000 rodents a year, making them amazing natural pest control for farms like ours.
• They don’t hoot — they screech, hiss, and scream (hence the nickname “ghost owl”).

We’re excited to share that Verizon’s equipment overhaul project at The Granary has officially wrapped up this week, and we want to express our sincere appreciation.
Corporate giants aren’t always known for going the extra mile for small businesses (or in our case, a 82-year-old grain elevator), but our goals aligned perfectly. With the right team on the ground and advancements in technology, we successfully redesigned the cellular equipment layout on the tower.
The attached before-and-after photos highlight several key improvements. Most meaningful to us are the final two images: the elevator shaft, once completely hidden and packed with massive cables feeding the radios and antennas above, is now beautifully illuminated. It’s the view you’ll enjoy looking up from the ground floor of The Coffee Mill — coming soon!
Huge thanks to the Verizon staff and contract crew who made this happen. This is another step toward breathing new life into this historic Sequim landmark and creating a welcoming community space.

Over the past four years, it’s often been difficult to see the progress in real time. When you’re deep in the pit, one shovel at a time can feel insignificant.
That’s why we’re so grateful for the progress photos we’ve taken along the way — they offer powerful, tangible proof of just how far we’ve come. It’s hard to believe all four of these photos were taken from the exact same spot.
We’re incredibly excited to soon share one of Sequim’s most important historic structures with you all: the 1923 Granary grain elevator at 531 W. Washington St. A beloved local landmark and symbol of our agricultural heritage, this building stands as a testament to the community’s strong tradition of historic preservation — from the New Dungeness Lighthouse and the 1893 Dungeness Schoolhouse to the Sequim Opera House.
As William J. Murtagh wrote in Keeping Time: “At its best, preservation engages the past in a conversation with the present over a mutual concern for the future.”
We’re honored to carry that spirit forward by breathing new life into Sequim’s iconic “skyscraper” and creating a new gathering place for our community.

Happy June, Sequim! 🦉
We’ve got a lot of exciting updates coming your way in the weeks ahead, but first — some really fun news!
After years of our custom owl box only hosting nesting pigeons, we finally have some proper tenants! They were so quiet we had no idea they were there and completely missed the nesting and hatching. While cleaning an adjacent space, we peeked inside… and were thrilled to discover twin owlets — Dawley and Frank (ask our kids about those name choices 😊).
We’re hoping this becomes an annual tradition! We’ll share occasional video clips of interesting moments, but we also want to invite all of you to follow along live as these fluff balls grow and eventually fledge.

Recognize this upstanding citizen? He appears to have incorreclty assumed we were done with our pallet of concrete and thought 1:30am on Monday (4th) morning would be a good time to help us dispose of it. Once again, any tips would be greatly appreciated!
