🍂 Monday Energy Tip: Space Heaters

A space heater can be pretty tempting when you’re sitting in a chilly home office or trying to warm up a drafty room. 🥶 But before you plug one in, a few safety precautions are important.

If you’re shopping for an electric space heater, a higher price doesn’t necessarily mean better performance. More expensive models may offer quieter operation, longer warranties, timers or remotes, but effective heaters are available at a range of price points.

🔥 Whatever you choose, make safety the priority. Look for a heater with:
🔹 Automatic shutoff if it overheats
🔹 Tip-over protection, especially if you have kids or pets
🔹 Certification from a recognized testing laboratory, such as UL Solutions, ETL (Intertek) or CSA

Once you bring it home, remember these important safety tips:
✅ Place your heater on a hard, level, nonflammable surface.
✅ Keep at least 3 feet of space between the heater and kids, pets, furniture, bedding, curtains and other combustible materials.
✅ Turn it off when you leave the room or go to bed.
✅ Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord, and don't plug another electrical device into the same outlet.
✅ Never run the cord underneath a rug, carpet or furniture.
✅ Check the cord periodically and stop using the heater if it becomes frayed or damaged.
✅ Unplug the heater when it’s not in use.
✅ Keep heaters away from paint, gasoline and other flammable materials.
✅ Be especially cautious using a space heater around water, including in bathrooms.

⚠️ And one important reminder: Propane-fueled space heaters produce carbon monoxide and are not recommended for indoor use. While some models are marketed for indoor use with specific safety features and ventilation requirements, avoiding them indoors eliminates that risk.

Space heaters can take the chill out of a cold room. Just give them plenty of space and use them safely! 🔌🔥

🍂 Monday Energy Tip: Vacuum Up That Fridge!

When was the last time you looked behind your refrigerator? 😬

If the answer is “never,” you may want to grab the vacuum.

Your refrigerator’s condenser coils help release heat, but over time they can collect dust, pet hair and kitchen grime. When those coils get dirty, your refrigerator has to work harder to stay cool. That can use more energy, put extra wear on your appliance and potentially lead to costly repairs.

The good news? Cleaning them is pretty easy!

🧹 Grab a vacuum, soft brush and about 20 minutes:

1. Unplug your refrigerator. Safety first!
2. Find the coils. They’re usually behind the fridge or underneath it behind the front grille.
3. Gently brush away the dust and debris.
4. Vacuum the coils and surrounding area.
5. Vacuum underneath and behind the fridge too. You might be surprised by what’s hiding back there. 👀
6. Put everything back and plug your refrigerator in.

📅 For most homes, cleaning the coils about every six months is a good goal. Have pets? Those fur tumbleweeds may mean checking them closer to every three months. 🐾

A little cleaning can help your refrigerator run more efficiently and last longer.

Now the question is... who’s brave enough to look behind their fridge? 😄
