THANK YOU, WADSWORTH EAGLES AERIE #2117

The Seville-Guilford Fire Department would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Wadsworth Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie #2117, for inviting us to be part of their People Helping People Event and for their generous donation to our department.

This donation will be used to purchase essential firefighting gear and equipment that will help our members perform their duties safely, effectively, and efficiently while serving our community.

What makes this event even more special is seeing the incredible number of organizations that the Wadsworth Eagles support. From fire departments and law enforcement agencies to local charities and nonprofit organizations, their generosity reaches far beyond the walls of their organization and makes a real difference throughout our communities.

Organizations like the Wadsworth Eagles remind us what community service is all about people coming together to help others.

We would also like to recognize the Eagles’ leadership, Charity Committee, Ladies Auxiliary, and all the members whose hard work and dedication make events like this possible.

On behalf of the officers and firefighters of the Seville-Guilford Fire Department, THANK YOU for your generosity, your continued support of public safety, and everything you do for the communities we serve!

The Seville-Guilford Fire Department would like to congratulate Firefighter Cody Behunin on successfully completing the Fire and Emergency Services Instructor I course through the Ohio Fire Academy and passing his IFSAC certification examination!

This accomplishment makes Cody one of our department’s newest certified fire instructors!

The Fire and Emergency Services Instructor I certification prepares firefighters to effectively deliver training, understand adult learning principles, manage classroom instruction, and help educate the next generation of firefighters.

WHAT MAKES THIS CERTIFICATION SPECIAL?

Cody didn’t just complete an instructor course. He successfully earned an IFSAC-accredited certification!

The International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) is an internationally recognized organization that accredits fire service certification systems to ensure they meet established professional qualification standards.

An IFSAC-accredited certification demonstrates that an individual has been evaluated against recognized professional standards through an accredited certification process. These credentials can also provide opportunities for certification reciprocity and recognition across jurisdictions, subject to individual state requirements.

While many local instructor courses provide valuable training, not all result in an IFSAC-accredited certification. This distinction adds significant value to Cody’s accomplishment.

OUTSTANDING TRAINING AT AN INCREDIBLE VALUE!

One of the most impressive aspects of this achievement is the affordability of the training offered through the Ohio Fire Academy.

Ohio Fire Academy: Well under $100

Comparable local courses: $700–$1,200

Many comparable courses in our area do not offer an IFSAC-accredited certification, making the opportunity provided by the Ohio Fire Academy even more valuable.

For a fraction of the cost, our firefighters have access to high-quality instruction and nationally recognized certification opportunities.

The Ohio Fire Academy is truly an outstanding organization and one of the greatest training resources available to Ohio’s fire service.

Their commitment to providing affordable, high-quality professional education is especially important for smaller departments like ours, where every dollar matters.

We are extremely fortunate to have developed a strong working relationship with the Ohio Fire Academy. Through this partnership, we can provide our firefighters with professional development opportunities that would otherwise place a significant financial burden on our department and taxpayers.

The ability to obtain nationally recognized certifications at such reasonable costs is an incredible benefit, and we greatly appreciate everything the Ohio Fire Academy does to support Ohio’s firefighters.

INVESTING IN OUR PEOPLE IS INVESTING
IN OUR COMMUNITY!

As we continue moving the Seville-Guilford Fire Department forward, professional development remains one of our highest priorities.

Every new certification strengthens our department. Every additional instructor improves our ability to train our personnel. And every dollar we save through partnerships like this allows us to direct more resources toward equipment, staffing, and services for our residents.

Congratulations again, Cody! Your commitment to continuing your education and becoming an instructor demonstrates the initiative and professionalism we want to see throughout our department.

We look forward to having you share your knowledge and skills with your fellow firefighters!

Over the next two days, the Seville-Guilford Fire Department is proud to welcome more than 20 participants from 13 agencies across Ohio for Leadership in Supervision: Creating Environments for Professional Growth.

Developed by the National Fire Academy, this course helps current and future supervisors strengthen their skills in adaptive leadership, change management, ethics, communication, difficult conversations, and decision-making. Participants also develop a personal leadership plan to put what they learn into practice.

This is the first course in a three-part series and is a requirement for the National Fire Academy’s Managing Officer credential. Participants will return for two-day sessions in November and December to complete the remaining courses.

This training is provided free of charge through the Ohio Fire Academy’s Regional Delivery program when program requirements are met. Regional offerings require participation from at least three fire departments and approval from the Ohio Fire Academy superintendent. Departments interested in hosting can submit a request through the Ohio Fire Academy’s web portal.

We appreciate the Ohio Fire Academy for making this opportunity available and thank every participating agency for investing in professional development. Bringing fire and EMS professionals together allows us to share experiences, learn from one another, and build stronger leadership for the communities we serve.

It is with great sorrow that the Ohio State Highway Patrol announces the off-duty death of Sergeant Tyler Carr of the Mansfield Post, who passed away following a tragic traffic crash today.

Our thoughts are with Sergeant Carr's family, the Mansfield Post, the Bucyrus District and the Patrol family as a whole.

Please join us in congratulating Danny Loparo and George Detorakis on their promotions to Lieutenant with the Seville-Guilford Fire Department, effective October 7, 2026!

These promotions follow the first formal line-officer promotional testing process in our department’s history. Candidates completed a 150-question written examination covering building construction, fire officer principles and practices, and firefighting strategy and tactics, along with an assessment center and interview panel. Three outside assessors evaluated scenarios designed to test leadership, decision-making, communication, and the ability to apply knowledge under pressure.

As part-time Lieutenants, Danny and George will provide flexibility to cover shifts without an assigned officer, strengthening supervision and supporting our crews.

Thank you to our Guilford Township Trustees for supporting this step forward in our promotional process and to the outside chiefs who contributed their time and expertise.

Congratulations, Lieutenant Loparo and Lieutenant Detorakis! We look forward to your continued service and leadership for our department and community.

This week, Chief Geiger completed Fire Officer III and Fire Officer IV through the Ohio Fire Academy, earning IFSAC-accredited certifications based on the nationally recognized NFPA 1021 professional qualification standards.

These advanced courses focus on executive-level leadership, administration, strategic planning, organizational management, and complex decision-making. For a Fire Chief, completing these certifications demonstrates a continued commitment to professional growth and provides additional knowledge and tools needed to effectively lead a modern fire service organization.

Continued education at the Chief Officer level helps ensure strong leadership today while preparing the department for the challenges of tomorrow.

As Fire Chief, I believe professional development is one of the best investments we can make in our department.

Congratulations to Assistant Chief Tammy Johnson and Lieutenant Steve Kantorik on completing the L105 Public Information Basics course.

Strong leadership goes beyond managing an emergency scene, it also means communicating effectively with our community, the media, and our personnel.

I appreciate both of them continuing to invest their time in becoming better officers and bringing that knowledge back to Seville-Guilford.

~Chief ~
