You do.

Smoke alarms can save lives by giving you and your family the warning you need to get out quickly when a fire starts. But they can only do their job if they’re working properly.

Take a minute today to:
🔋 Test your smoke alarms to make sure they sound.
👂 Listen for the alarm so everyone in your home recognizes the sound.
🚪 Make sure you can hear them from bedrooms and sleeping areas.
📅 Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.

Don’t wait for the alarm to remind you.

Check it today. It could make all the difference when every second counts.

Not every firefighter started out knowing this would be their career. Many came from completely different jobs, industries and backgrounds before choosing a career in fire service.

Sometimes the “right” time doesn’t feel perfect. Sometimes, it simply feels like it’s time to try something meaningful.

This Fire Prevention Week, we’re giving a shoutout to the Shakopee first responders who took a risk, answered the call and chose a career dedicated to protecting Shakopee residents.

Their stories remind us that there isn’t just one path to becoming a firefighter or first responder.

Thank you for taking the leap, serving our community and being there when Shakopee needs you.

Your smoke alarm is designed to get your attention, but do you know what it’s telling you?

🔋 A chirp usually means it’s time to check your alarm. Replace the batteries and make sure your smoke alarm is working properly.

🚨 A loud alarm means it’s time to act. If your smoke alarm is sounding, get out immediately and call 911. Do not go back inside until firefighters say it’s safe.

Remember:
✅ Test your smoke alarms regularly.
✅ Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.
✅ Make sure everyone in your home knows what the alarm sounds like and what to do when it goes off.

A small sound can be a big warning.

Old batteries don’t belong in the trash or recycling bin. Improperly discarded batteries can create a fire hazard, especially when they come into contact with other materials.

So, what should you do with those old batteries?

📍 Bring them to a public drop-off site at the Scott County Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 588 Country Trail E., Jordan, MN

Before tossing that old battery, think twice and dispose of it safely.

Firefighters see firsthand how small safety choices can make a big difference. Here are a few things I would do to help protect my home and family:

🚪 Sleep with my bedroom door closed. A closed door can help slow the spread of fire and smoke.
📱 Never charge my phone unattended or on the couch. Charge devices on a hard, flat surface and keep them where you can see them.
🚗 Move over for approaching emergency vehicles. When you see or hear emergency responders approaching, safely move over and give them room to get through.
🍳 Never store items on the stove or inside the oven. Keep the cooking area clear of anything that could catch fire and always check the oven before turning it on.
🚨 Replace smoke detectors when needed. Smoke detectors generally should be replaced every 10 years, while batteries should be checked regularly.

Fire safety starts with the choices we make every day. Take a few minutes to look around your home and see what you can do to make it safer.
